From a quick chat with an Austrian friend of mine, here's what I got:

Telekom Austria's line rental seems to be 17.44 euro/month, but their broadband is relatively expensive. From another company called "inode" it's cheaper. Somebody who can actually speak German may want to double-check I've understood everything right, but here goes:
    • The ADSL is a "resold" product from Telekom Austria available in all broadband-enabled exchanges, while their XDSL is available in unbundled exchanges only.
    • At the end of 2003, inode had unbundled 87 exchanges. By end 2004, this was 147. Apparently this allows them to cover 50% of businesses and 55% of households. I don't know what the line-pass rate is.
    • I don't know if they include voice calls in their tarriffs on xDSL lines, but they do mention VOIP availability for some.

The link above is easy to read, even without language skills. Sample prices (per month), are:

    ADSL (skipped some, here):
    • Cheapest: 256/64 (not really BB, but anyway), 250MB cap. E18.90 + line rental
    • Cheapest at 512kb: none. Next slowest is 768/128, 400MB cap. E24.50 + line rental
    • Most expensive: 768/128 again, 8GB cap, E59 + line rental.

xDSL capped: This is where it gets much better. No line rental to be added here (unbundled, remember):
    • 1024/128, 4GB cap, E39
    • 1536/384, 20GB cap, E49
    • 2048/512, 20GB cap, E59
    • 3072/512, 30GB cap, E89

xDSL uncapped: Again, no line rental:
    • 768/128, E59
    • 1024/128, E69
    • 1280/256, E79

Hope that helps. Hope it's right!

Perhaps one additional info from the offers: The caps do not apply for night-time bandwidth use. So for all means and purposes the capped versions could be called unlimited.
And important, as you have already mentioned, there is no extra line rental to be paid. They offer as well VOIP and combination packets with mobile company Three. Porting the existing telephone number to the VOIP costs €26 once-off.

Those not really quite broadband offers, other successful countries like Denmark have them as well, are very valuable for Internet and Broadband development and should not be laughed at.

Just to compare with the Irish situation. To get a similar always-on service in Ireland, you'd need to purchase 5 FRIACO 150 hours "flat-rate" services and run dual-channel 128 kb/s ISDN on them. You'd pay Eircom some 150 euros (plus the ISDN line rental) a month.

    P.

    Edit:
And one can't even get more than one FRIACO packages, so it would work out much dearer: From Eircom FAQ:

    Q. Can I stay connected all the time?
    A. eircom net flat rate packages are not designed to support continuous or unattended Internet access. If you require an always-on solution, try eircom broadband. Specific limitations are as follows:
1 - each flat rate account can only be accessed from one specific phone line. You specify this number at sign-up.
2 - Your connection will automatically be disconnected after 20 minutes idle time.*
We also reserve the right to
1 - Limit online usage to 12 hours in any 24 period
2 - Limit online session to 2 hours. After which you can reconnect immediately.
*Idle time is defined as time on line when no data has been transmitted by the Customer to the Service or has been received by the Customer using the Service.

    Q. What happens if I exceed my allocated time?
    A. If you exceed your allocated time you will be charged eircom net Free Internet call charges for any excess. eircom net Free call charges.
Price per minute* (incl. VAT) :
    Daytime (8am - 6pm Mon - Fri.) 5.07c
    Evening (6pm - 8am) Mon - Thurs. 1.26c
    Weekend (6pm Fri. - 8am Mon.) 1.26c
*A minimum call charge of 6.35c applies. Allocated time: The amount of call charge free time provided as part of the package

More from Iceland. Thanks to theTarget

    OgVodafone

It is free to download within iceland, but they charge 2,49kr for every extra MB downloaded (up to price guarantee). This price guarantee they've got is odd. They say you never pay for more than 2GB foreign downloading in 1mb/s, 2mb/s and 3mb/s. Sundays are "days off", you can get 500 MB extra download every sunday (or 500 mbs for the sum of all mondays in a month.. they're not clear on which it is).

Speed up to - Speed from - Download - Price - Max Price you'll have to pay

    1 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 100 MB - €48 - €108.
    1 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 1 GB - €64 - €96.
    1 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 2 GB - €76 - €76.
    2 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 100 MB - €61 - €121.
    2 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 1 GB - €76 - €108.
    2 Mb/s - 512 Kb/s - 2 GB - €89 - €89
    3 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 100 MB - €68 - €129.
    3 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 1 GB - €84 - €116.
    3 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 2 GB - €97 - €97
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 100 MB - €92 - Does not apply
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 1 GB - €108 - Does not apply
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 2 GB - €121 - Does not apply
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 4 GB - €147 - Does not apply
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 6 GB - €172 - Does not apply
    6 Mb/s - 832 Kb/s - 10 GB - €232 - Does not apply

Oh and in the base subscription i mentioned earlier, with speed of 256kb/s to 512kb/s, no foreign download and monthly price of 2990 kr. has a price of 4,99 kr for every "extra" MB downloaded from a foreign source.

I'm not completely clear on what the "Speed up to" and "Speed from" are.

We're getting good feedback from people who saw our price table and are sending us links to other providers who offer other entry level packages. Please keep adding to this list as we are going to publish updates every quarter now. It's been said we're cherry picking the cheapest providers so here are other providers including incumbents. Still way cheaper you'll note.

    Thrunet:
    http://english.thrunet.com/service/multi_cable.asp
    Cable Operator in South Korea.
    €31.97

    DSL: http://english.thrunet.com/service/multi_adsl.asp
    €24.18

    TUT: http://english.thrunet.com/service/multi_tut.asp
    €24.44

    Hanaro:
    http://www.hanaro.com/eng/iproduct/vne_vlite.asp
    31,660 Won (€23.7956) per month for VDSL/XDSL

    Korea Telecom:
    http://www.letskt.com/en/Product/Service_contents.jsp?mn=1110&scode=1110&sname=Megapass%20ADSL
    24.8129 for 4Mbps/ 640Kbps

or for anyone in Apt complexes you can get 100Mbps/100Mbps for €25.71

    *Edit*
Remove €4 a month as all prices included equipment rental, which you apparently don't have to take. You can use your own.

Cheaper Japanese packages on the way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 354 ✭✭AndrewMc

For the next list could line rental be included as another column or something? I know you don't want to clutter the list, but it'd be nice to remind the media we really are getting screwed on the rental as well.

Got sent this by email about Japan:
As you mentioned in your article, DSL in japan is an old technology that is no
longer the option of choice (I would go for fibre).

Anyway, even sticking with DSL, and looking at the options available from the
Japanese equivalent of eircom - NTT , you can get a dsl service
    http://flets.com/adsl/index.html
with Download - 47Mbps, Upload 5Mbps, including line rental &
    VAT for 3738yen = 27.08 euros

This is much more bandwidth & still cheaper than the 30 euro price you have
    listed for Japan.

Note that NTT is the ex state monopoly (like eircom) is usually the most
expensive supplier, and most people would not be going for the DSL service
anyway since the FTTH solution provides 100Mbps up and down for about 3150yen
for those living in apartments. And then if you choose a carrier other than
NTT of course both packages would be far cheaper.
