    What's your favourite comedy?

Mine has to be Dumb & Dumber. I've never laughed at a film so much and I must have seen it over 10 times and would still be doubled over laughing each time.

Young Frankenstein or Some Like it Hot - both brilliant

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Yeah, Some Like It Hot is excellent!

I don't really have a favourite. I like the John Hughes teen comedies (e.g. Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club). Not that they're extremely funny but I love their style/type of humour/etc.

There's Something About Mary is pretty high in my books too. :D

    Wayne's World too, of course.

If your hyper and with friends, taking the piss out of movies like You Got Served can be pretty funny.

"Some Like it Hot", which is not only my favourite comedy, but also my favourite film. Absolute genius.

If i had to pick a favourite comedy.... i'd have to go with 'Kingpin', for sheer re-watchable value.

If you haven't seen the film, go out and rent it NOW!!!

Can practically recite the whole film line-for-line now.

EDIT: Some great quotes for ye all:

Neighbor: Hey Roy, can you get sick from drinking piss?
    Roy: I think you can.
Neighbor: Even if its your own?

ESPN Announcer: So Roy, where have you been for the last fifteen years?
Roy: Well, I uh, well, ya see, I uh... Drinking. Lot a drinking.
ESPN Announcer: I see. Well, are you still drinking?
Roy: No. I uh... I put... uh... Why, you buying?

Mr. Boorg: How many children do you have?
Roy: None that I know of. I mean, I'm unable to have children. Nasty cheese grating accident as a boy.

Roy: Hey, I hope you don't mind, I got up a little early, so I took the liberty of milking your cow for you. Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one, whew.
[Takes a drink from the bucket]
Mr. Boorg: We don't have a cow. We have a bull.
Roy: I'm gonna brush my teeth.

Roy: Just because you're familiar with the missionary position doesn't make you a missionary.
Claudia: Look, Mr. Munster, you're not exactly the smartest guy I ever ran across.
Roy: Oh yeah? And who are you, Alfred Einstein?

Landlady: What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap? You really jarred something loose tiger.

    [On smoking]
Ishmael: You should try to quit. They say its bad for your heart, your lungs. It quickens the aging process.
Roy: Who's done more research than the good people at the American Tobacco Industry? They say its harmless. Why would they lie? If you're dead, you can't smoke.

Roy: I know what you're thinking, but let me explain...
[Claudia kicks Roy in the crotch]
Roy: [very softly] Mommy. You must have a really wide foot because you got both of them

[refering to Roy's hook for a hand]
Claudia: It must be hard to spank your monkey.
    Ishmael: You have a monkey?

Roy: Thomas can raise a barn, but can he pick up a 7-10 split?
Ishmael: God blessed my brother to be a good carpenter. It's okay.
Roy: Yeah, well he blessed you, too, and I'll give you a hint what it is. It's round, has three holes, and you put your fingers into it.
Ishmael: You leave Rebecca out of this.

[Roy Munson is getting ready for his turn to bowl]
Ernie McCracken: It all comes down to this roll. Roy Munson, a man-child, with a dream to topple bowling giant Ernie McCracken. If he strikes, he's the 1979 Odor-Eaters Champion. He's got one foot in the frying pan and one in the pressure cooker. Believe me, as a bowler, I know that right about now, your bladder feels like an overstuffed vacuum cleaner bag and your butt is kinda like an about-to-explode bratwurst.
Roy: Hey. Do you mind? I wasn't talking when you were bowling.
Ernie McCracken: Was I talking out loud? Was I? Sorry. Good luck.

McKnight Bowl Bartender: So, you two are dictionary salesmen?
Roy: You would be punctilious in assuming that."

Ishmael: Run for the hills everybody, there's a giant s*it-cloud coming.

    Roy: [quietly] Shh, be quiet.
    [he trips and falls]
Roy: Oww, I think I tore my sack.
Ishmael: [loudly] Are you OK Mr. Munson?
Roy: Shh, what did I just say?
Ishmael: Uh, I think I tore my sack.

Claudia: He said handSOME, not handLESS.

    Ishmael: Hi Mr. Skidmark.

Little boy: Sometimes when I wake up in the morning Mr. McCracken's already there.

Zoolander is my favourite comedy, I know most of the dialogue having watched it so many times.
Saw Meet The Fochers the other night, i.m.o better than the first. Very cringe-inducing film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,460 ✭✭✭Blisterman

    Waynes world 2
Not just my favourite comedy, but my favourite movie.
Waynes world 1 close behind. But 2's slightly better.

I loved 'Meet The Parents'... but thought 'Meet The Fockers' was terrible!!!!!

Except for the one scene where Greg is minding Jack and Dina's nephew and due to numerous misfortunes, the child ends up with the bottle of Jack Daniels etc. :D

Thought Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman were both terrible also.

Did enjoy Owen Wilson's little cameo at the end though.

EDIT: Got the 'Jack Black Pack' on DVD in Xtra-Vision after Christmas (reduced from €35 to €25). Pack contains 'School Of Rock' and 'Orange County'... both great comedies with brillant writing from Mike White and great performances from Jack Black. Am watching 'School Of Rock' right now! :D

If I only had to pick one it'd have to be Annie Hall

"Duane: Can I confess something? I tell you this as an artist,I think you'll understand. Sometimes when I'm driving... on the road at night... I see two headlights coming toward me. Fast. I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on into the oncoming car. I can anticipate the explosion. The sound of shattering glass. The... flames rising out of the flowing gasoline.
Alvy Singer: Right. Well, I have to - I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth. "

[Alvy addresses a pair of strangers on the street]
Alvy Singer: Here, you look like a very happy couple, um, are you?
    Female street stranger: Yeah.
Alvy Singer: Yeah? So, so, how do you account for it?
Female street stranger: Uh, I'm very shallow and empty and I have no ideas and nothing interesting to say.
Male street stranger: And I'm exactly the same way.
Alvy Singer: I see. Wow. That's very interesting. So you've managed to work out something?

It's funny how many liked Zoolander. I heard so many bad reports about it and I actually enjoyed it aswell. Ben Stiller's brilliant.

Must get 'Some Like it Hot' -never seen it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

zoolander is brilliant. along with dodgeball and starsky 'n' hutch.

stiller and wilson are atm, the best comic duo.

pure gold when they get together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭eljono

    Stiller is also very good in Mystery Men as Mr. Furious;

Mr. Furious:Do yourself a favor and don't punch my clock cos I'm a Pantera's box you do not wanna open!
    Casanova Frankenstein: It is "Pandora."
Mr. Furious: Please... don't correct me, it sickens me.

Mr. Furious: I don't need a compass to know which way the wind shines!

Mr. Furious: I guess tonight the lone wolf hunts alone

I can't believe Zoolander has been mentioned about a dozen times without one post for the Life Of Brian ("Crucifixion's a doddle") or The Jerk ("I was born a poor black child"). Two classics.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 175 ✭✭mwnger

Oh yeah, and anyone who posts an Adam Sandler film (though it's only a matter of time) deserves to be shot dead, that guy is complete con-artist, I dunno how he gets away with it. His 'comedy' veers from childish toilet humour -don't get me wrong, I enjoy toilet humour as much as the next person, but only when it's done with a modicum of wit a la South Park- to sickening sentimentality. He's of that American tradition of stand-up comic who thinks something is twice as funny WHEN IT'S SCREAMED AT THE TOP OF YOUR VOICE!! I remember him on Clive Anderson a few years ago, and he barely said anything, he was absolutely sh*tting himself that Anderson would rip him apart. Proving to me that he completely lacked any kind of wit or imagination - or personality for that matter.

...hmm, did I mention I don't like him?

    Monty Python's Life of Brian.

    Annie Hall.

    i]Alvy has killed two spiders[/i
Alvy Singer: I did it. I killed 'em both.
    i]Annie starts crying[/i
Alvy Singer: What's the matter? What are you sad about? What did you want me to do? Capture 'em and rehabilitate 'em?

Life of Brian or the Holy Grail...

"I'm Brian, and so's my wife!"

    "And what also floats? "
"Bread? No, no, no. Apples .... gravy ... very small rocks ..."

Some Like it Hot - It's all about the last scene :) "well nobody's perfect"

Also loved the Wayne's Worlds and Zoolander. "A Eugoogilizer, the guy who reads the Eugoogly" I laughed so hard!
