Anyone for Poker?

For anyone who's unaware: the cards soc hold weekly tournaments of texas holdem, monday nights in the buttery. Usually it's just 5euro buy in. Tonight though as a result of the classical society having a table quiz in the buttery, it's going to be of a different format. Just a few cash games down by the pool table. AFAIK there will be 5euro tables (ie where you just pay a fiver, you get your chips and play until somebody on the table has all the chips), 10euro tables and 20euro tables.

The paper in my wallet being of low monetary value I shall be sticking to the five euron table. Last week was my first time playing in a tournament and I have to say it was exhilarating. Best fiver I've spent in a long time. I didn't win, or even come near winning, but two of my friends got into the top 5 and won flights, accomodation to scotland and 50eur entry tickets for the uk student poker championship! That was another change of format last week, usually there are cash prizes.

I only know the jist of hold'em... would it be tough on the night to get into the craic of it all?... I understand the basics, but I wuldn't be very good at dealing and don't quite understand the FLOP and some of the other exciting terms ...

    I'm a HERO at 5card though!

Sorry checked too late.. Good games we had! Great nite..
But I'll be glad to get back to the normal tourny format next week. Seb, you want to be getting down there between 6 and quarter past (every monday). It's so tables can be set up and people get all their chips etc etc. Games start at 6:30, re-buys for the first hour, top up after the first hour on the hour.
Chump, if you know the the gist I wouldn't worry, the terms aren't really important, and people are pretty patient. I'd swear the chap beside me had never played before, mostly because he tried to deal us 5 cards each. Even though we'd already played a few hands. He also asked "can I look at my cards now?" after betting after the flop!
He got on grand, on our table of 8 he got into the last 4 so I wouldn't worry.

If you want I'll hold your hand down there next week (not literally of course but u know what I mean)

EDIT: btw I'm watchin poker at the mo' on challenge (ch 121 sky digital). Frickin deadly it is! I've bin playin draw for for a while now (just with friends), have to say though holdem is the king!

    gambling is wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

It's a mortal sin and you're all going to burn in hell for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Gambling is only wrong when the house always wins..

    Examples:
Roulette (those damn green 0's grrrrr..... statistical stupidity)
Keno (you really have to be off your rocker to think you even have a chance)
Slots (they only pay out a percentage of what is put in them!)

Whereas say poker, with 5 people going in. It's a great thrill and no money goes to a greedy third party..

    Keno

What's this? My your description I think it would be black jack. Should I search on it? Or should I let you tell me. Let's hear what you have to say.

hrm methinks keno is the one like the lotto or bingo or something. i remember seeing giant screens with loadsa numbers in vegas...no idea how to play it or what its all about though!

Yeah blank has the right idea, it's like a lottery/bingo type thing. Afaik it has the lowest payout to chance of winning ratio than any other casino game. I read somewhere, a professional gambler giving his 2 cents on keno strategy: "The best way to play keno is not to play."

    Says it all imo.

btw I wont be playing on monday cos it's Japanese night in the atrium, 3 euro in, kendo demonstation, sushi workshop and much more I've forgotten about. Proceeds go to tsunami relief like everything else.

I'll see you at the Japanese night, I won't be there until near nine though due to band practice. I may as well say hello to you for once, I feel kind of weird walking past you in the physics building/outside SU shop and never saying hello. I would say hello only I don't want to walk up to you and go "So you're that guy from the internet, you're nothing like your ad said you would be."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

lol.. :D I never did notice yourself sorry, even though ur pic is on the who's who.

You know it wud actually be legend funny if you came up and said that, especially if I was surrounded by a bunch of mates.

    ANYWAY..
To Celebrate the 1 year anniversary of The Trinty Cards Society (since we took
it over from a bunch of Bridge nerds!) we are hosting the largest texas hold'em
tournament EVER in Ireland or the UK.

First Ever Dublin Student Poker Championships

Want to be crowned the Student Poker Champion of Dublin? Think you've got what
it take to make it to the top? well then make sure to get your tickets as soon
    as possible!

The Event is to be a 270 man No Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament with a €20 buy
in and a prize fund of €3500.

It will take place on Wednesday, 9th February (Week 5 of Term)in the Gresham
Hotel, O'Connell St. which means we won't be getting kicked out at 11pm.

Students from all over Dublin, Ireland, and even Scotland will be competing for
the crown and it is sure to go on well into the night.

There are a limited number of tickets as only a portion of the 270 will be sold
in Trinity so when they go on sale next week you'd want to snap them up quickly.

I will be e-mailing you over the next couple of days to let you know when &
where ticket will be available from so keep an eye on your inbox.

This will be the biggest Hold'em Tournament ever held in Britain or Ireland,
and with such a huge prize fund it is expected that demand will greatly exceed supply.
Tickets will also be available on Monday night at the regular Tournament in
the Buttery. All Players can play in this tournament. $5 buy-in with rebuys &
    topups.

The Top 12 players on Monday night will win tickets to the Dublin Student
Poker Championships on 9th February and obviously there will also be the usual
rewards for those reaching the final table.

tickets will be on sale all next week from 1-2pm everyday in the Hamilton &
    Arts Block.

There's a discussion about this up on the poker page here somewhere...just you mentioned that tickets are on sale in the hamilton & arts block, yet on that thread (which I couldn't be arsed finding), "evilbert" said tickets are on sale only in the arts block. Maybe he forgot, but meh.

    Fwd from cards soc
I've been in contact with a guy in London making a Poker Documentary for a British TV Station on Sky Digital.

He wants to interview people from our society about Student Poker. If you feel
strongly about Poker/Student Poker, are not camera shy, want to be on TV, or
have any interesting poker stories please get back to me as soon as you can
with your full name, e-mail phon number etc.

It's lightly likely that this guy will be recording our Dublin Student Poker
Championships for his documentary also....all the more reason to buy a ticket.

    Niall

If anyone wants to learn how to play or get better at texas holdem before playing for real money. You can learn and practice with play-money on holdempoker.com. It's a very good site. Don't worry about signing up, you get no spam or anything. I play on it everyday..
