Heh heh... when I was about 11 I drank a 2 litre bottle of milk in one go just to see if I could. My mam got mad because it was the only milk in the house and I had to go up to the shop and get some more. :D

I didn't feel to good afterwards either. :p

Too Much of a Good Thing Can Kill You

A new review of three deaths of US military recruits highlights the dangers of drinking too much water.

The military has traditionally focused on the dangers associated with heat illness, which has killed a number of healthy, young enrollees. However, pushing the need to drink water too far can also have deadly consequences.

The risk has always been not drinking enough. And then people who aren't medically attuned get overzealous, inducing recruits to drink amounts of water that endanger their health.

In September 1999, a 19-year-old Air Force recruit collapsed during a 5.8-mile walk, with a body temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Doctors concluded he had died of both heat stroke and low blood sodium levels as a result of overhydration.

During January 2000, a 20-year-old trainee in the Army drank around 12 quarts of water during a 2- to 4-hour period while trying to produce a urine specimen for a drug test. She then experienced fecal incontinence, lost consciousness and became confused, then died from swelling in the brain and lungs as a result of low blood sodium.

In March 2001, a 19-year-old Marine died from drinking too much water after a 26-mile march, during which he carried a pack and gear weighing more than 90 pounds. Although he appeared fine during the beginning stages of the 8-hour walk, towards the end he began vomiting and appeared overly tired.

He was then sent to the hospital, where he fell into a coma, developed brain swelling and died the next day. It is unclear how much water he drank during the march, but Marines were given a "constant emphasis" on drinking water before and during the activity.

Drinking too much water is dangerous because the body cannot excrete that much fluid. Excess water then goes to the bowel, which pulls salt into it from the body, diluting the concentration of salt in the tissues.

Changing the concentration of salt, in turn, causes a shifting of fluids within the body, which can then induce a swelling in the brain. The swollen organ will then press against the bones of the skull, and become damaged.

Previous cases of water toxicity have been noted in athletes who consume excessive amounts in order to avoid heat stroke. In addition, certain psychiatric patients may drink too much water in an attempt to wash away their sins, or flush out poisons they believe have entered their bodies.

In 1998, the Army released fluid replacement guidelines, which recommend a certain intake of water but limit it to 1 to 1-1/2 quarts per hour and 12 quarts per day.

Not sure if this is completely relevant, but I am aware of a few cases where ravers who have taken Ecstasy and consequently drank too much water have died. Not as a result of the drug, but of the water; apparently too much pressure was placed on the brain. Don't quote me on that, but it strikes me that attempting to drink that much water in 5 minutes is foolhardy in the extreme. There's only so much your body can take. TBH with that in mind, I don't think this thread is one that should be allowed on Boards - for much the same reason as the Guinness Book of Records has refused to list new life-threatening record attempts, if memory serves. Maybe the mods can bear me out.

You would probably drown...............or at least cause extreme pressure on your bladder and cause serious internal injuries.

well 2morrow morning when i get up and my stomach is empty, im going to have a go at 3L in five minutes. also i will have dialed 99 on the phone and have my fingure on 9 as im drinking

LMAO! If you're going to do it that is probably the best way......other than a A&E waiting room.

If you drink six pints in five minutes, then you will throw up. I know someone who tried it before, eeew that was the state of the sink after it

Would depend on your stomach capacity wouldnt it?!

Most slim people have a stomach capacity of 1 1/2 litres or so!so it wouldnt be possible without making them sick!I wouldnt be able to drink more than 1 1/2 litres without feeling sick!

    Not sure about others though!

Don't try this. It's extremely dangerous.

    5 litres = 1.1 gallons.

From my biology class in uni -

"If you drink a gallon of water in one sitting (i.e. under 5 minutes) the electrolyte balance in your body will get so screwed you will have a heart attack."

    So... don't do this.

As Trigger says, you'll fill up probably long before you hit the 3 litre mark. Luckily, unlike your bladder, it's quite likely your stomach will just contract as it gets full, forcing all the water back out of you, and not rupturing your stomach.

Too much water in your body can cause a rapid increase in osmotic pressure, which can be fatal, as it leads to cell degredation.

I strongly advise if you do this, to force yourself to be sick immediately when you hit your limit. Don't worry, it'll come out still cold, and it won't taste like puke.

I tried to drink five pints of water in 15 minutes on a bet before and ended up throwing up after the fourth.

I once rushed some cans at uni cause I had to be somewhere, and I put away 5 cans of harp in 2 minutes (yeah really stupid thing to do but that's me).

I only noticed how long it took when someone mentioned it to me who was watching at the time. I later mentioned it to someone else when they said that it was impossible to drink a certain amount in a certain time limit. To prove the point, I stupidly drank 5 full pint glasses of water in about 5 minutes. Stopping to breath and refill the glass.

I then threw up - but it was the coolest (temp) vomit I ever had. Was about 90% water. I can take a lot, but even I couldn't take that. I wouldn't recommend it, even as a prank or test of your own limits. It was a stupid thing to do and could have ended up worse than just vomiting.

Dont attempt this theres a serious chance YOU WILL DIE!!!

Which reminds me of those people during rag week who drink 4 pints of beer in about 20 seconds or the yard glass of beer in 30 secs.

Of course most puke it back up but still......

I drank a full bottle of malt vinegar in the Waterford RTC restaurant back in 1989

For a £30 bet. A lot of money in those days - especially for a student in first year.

We went straight on a pub crawl afterwards - The Rogue, Geoffs, Pulpit, Downes, T&Hs etc

Had a savage pain in my stomach later on that evening though....

is it possible to drink 5L of water in 5 minutes

After extensive testing, I have concluded that it is slightly beyond the average human's internal capacity. However, in the process of these experiments *strokes chin* I discovered that it is possible to eject 4.5 litres in about 8 seconds. Intriguing.
