Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

FA Cup Vs League Cup

(no, the league cup doesnt count)

    Am I missing something here?

Prize for winning League Cup = UEFA Cup spot.

Prize for winning FA Cup = UEFA Cup spot.

Now I know the 'prestige' of winning the FA Cup is greater than winning the League Cup, as their is more hostory attached to it (though i suspect this is a media manipulation - most exciting knockout competition in the world my arse), but if you look at the bigger clubs ie Arse, Man U, Lpool, Chelsea, they all so far have fielded weakened teams for both competitions. Do the bigger clubs even differentiate between Cup competitions anymore, caring more for top 4 & CL qualification.

So is it fair to say that winning the League Cup is just as big an honour as winning the FA Cup. Afterall, the prize is the same (not sure about prize money) ie UEFA Cup spot?

Its all about perceived prestige, built on history. The FA Cup was the first (1871) and has always been "the Cup" The League Cup (founded 1960) has had more names than I can remember. Sure they are equal in terms of Europe and both fill Wemberly or Millenium Stadium but which would you sooner have a winning medal for?

I think teams in Europe in a current season should not be allowed to play in the League Cup, they have quite enough to be going on with.

    Mike.

I like that idea, or else, I think that they should be forced to field a non first team squad, to give the youngsters a chance.

Sorry for going off topic, but with regard to the UEFA cup spot for the winners what happens in the following situation

Chelsea and Arsenal beat Burnley and Watford in the FA cup semi finals 1-0. Assuming that both Arsenal have both qualified for the CL, who if anyone qualifies for the UEFA Cup.

You have to get to the final to get a European place. I think in that case it would be rewarded to the 6th or 7th place team in the league.

I think the FA Cup UEFA Cup spot should be replaced by a CL. That would bring back the prestige and teams would field a stronger team.

But in that scenario we would have seen Millwall playing in the CL this year. Hardly appealing for the English league chiefs.

Were you watching Sky Sports phone in show? :) Anyway, I think thats a ridiculous suggestion for so many reasons.

But they would have had to qualify first

Exactly. Millwall would have lost in the qualifying stages and thus brought down the co-efficients for England as a whole. If one of the other clubs underperformed they could run the risk of slipping down the rankings and losing the 4th CL spot.

At least thats they way I think it would work.

The 4th CL spot would be gone if this was introduced

But if the FA Cup winners/runners up got into the Champions League I would doubt if Millwall would have been in the final last year...

I think they should have left the Cup Winners Cup as it was. Makes perfect sense to me to group the cup winners from each country together and let them play a knock out tournament, but UEFA went and got greedy with their expanded UEFA Cup and Champions League which I think has devalued both competitions tbh.

Very true SteM. I thought the Cup Winners Cup was a great competition back then... As was the UEFA Cup. Now I can't even watch the UEFA cup any more...

By the way... You'll have to change your signature soon! ;)

Yeah, I'm actually going over to the Middlesborough game and then goin again the following weekend to the Birmingham game. Then the Fulham game in March! :p

*checks for change in his pockets*

I am looking forward to the Middlesborough match the most though. The FA Cup will never lose its magic IMO. Regardless of the League Cup being put on a par with it (reward wise).

Enjoy, should be a cracking game. Head around to the Wetherspoons close to the ground for a few pints before the match, the atmosphere in that place is amazing before a cup game.

Yeah I was in that place a few times before... Its always jammed come match day. Almost impossible to get anywhere near the bar! Great craic though as you say.
