Hmmm, I'm torn here. Do I like his work or not...

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

I suppose it'd prove whether or not it's all his fault.

I'd sign that, but I couldn't call myself a "Loyal and loving fan" by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't know if the band's decline was due to Bob Rock or if it was just coincidence that he signed up around the same time as the band were running out of inspiration.

Yeah but there's only one way to find out. Stanger is the worst sounding album I can think of, just from a production point of view.

Of couse, I am fully aware that having shyte songs didn't help matters :)

That's a rather good point - although as DoctorJ pointed out, there's only one way to find out.

Metallica's downfall was the lack of the Mustaine and Burton influences on the band... Newsted had no input into the band and the other three just went their own way. Simple as.

I assume you've seen Some Kind Of Monster at this stage. Who else was just dying to punch Bob and Lars in the face during the part where they're ordering Kirk that he can't put any solos on the album?

I'm signing it just because of that!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

I don't care about any of this but this had me laughing my ass off...
Although Bob Rock’s first producing effort with Metallica, “The Black Album”, may have sold the most copies worldwide, it doesn’t mean the album is the most musically pleasing...

Yea, they're gonna sacrifice commercial gain to earn internet-fans respec' yo.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Heh... Kirk can't write solos any more anyway. He has ruined numerous songs with his over use of the wah, No Leaf Clover being the prime example. He has also been playing the same scale for the last ten years.

Ahh I dunno, he was never the most technically proficient but you just can't aregue with his work on Puppets and AJFA, when he wasn't playing Mustaine stuff anymore. I remember an interview around the beginning of the Bob Rock era where they were bitching about him wanting to play sweeps. Since then all he has played is ****e.

Amazingly, Kirk is the one I have the most respect for in that band at the moment.

I would agree with much of that in so far as there's an element of truth in it. However, I completely disagree with Mustaine's input. The guy wasn't in the band for very long at all and was, to be honest, a non-entity in the overall career of the band.

Burton's absence was and did have a profound effect on the band since he was the classically educated one and showed the others such concepts as counterpoint and harmony which is quite quite evident in Lightning and Puppets - and to an extent the after effect of his influence in AJFA

I think Newsted wasn't given the amount of say he should have had though.

I dunno Doc, I've never really been the biggest fan of his stuff anyway. And I would doubt that he became ****e over night just because he wasn't allowed to play any sweeps.

But then again I never really liked any of Metallica's stuff apart from one or two songs here and there.

Ahhh he did some great stuff back in the day, leads that were relevant to the feel of the song - The Thing That Should Not Be and And Justice For All (the song) are two that immediatley spring to mind. On the "Year And A Half In The Life Of..." videos there's a scene wtith Bob Rock taking the piss out of him for not playing a solo "with feeling" - ie blues scales - with the other pair of gimps looking on. I dunno if you were of age at the time but I remember everything being "about feeling" in the early 90's. To be a competant musician was frowned upon. It was the darkest of times. You can't take someone somewhere they don't want to go but I reckon Kirk was pushed towards medicrity. There is hope, Newsted has done streling work with Voivod since he climbed out of the wreckage.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Maybe so... But he sure hasn't improved since then. I would doubt if he was pushed towards mediocrity on No Leaf Clover because that solo really ruined what I thought was a very good song. I don't think Hetfield, Ulrich et all would be looking for Hammett to ruin a song they wrote to be honest.

He has always been the type of guy that over used his wah pedal anyway, you can see at most live shows he uses it even when the solo's that don't have any wah effects in them. Perfect example is Fade to Black on the AJFA tour. I've never seen him any different. Which I am sure Joe Satriani would have frowned upon...

Typical fcuking Metallica fans. Who the fcuk do they think they are telling a band how and who should produce their music. Metallica fans go fcuk yourselves. When the fcuk are you guys ever going to realise that Metallica are nothing but a ****t metal band who are a bunch of commercial puppets and are only popular because they are a fcuking trend.

Here is a petition we can agree on, a petition to tell Metallica and their fans to **** off!

in my opininon the reason metallica music is getting worse and worse is that the dont give a f**k anymore. They know people are going to go out and buy there music just cause its metallica they could go out and release another saint crappy album and it would sell millions.
    This is just my opinion.
