I had a post (and thread) deleted within the past 12 hours, and would like to know why. Is it standard practice for the moderator to inform my why the post was deleted, or do I have to request this information?

The post related to a request for assistance with the design of a site for a gay bar.

They probably thought you were a troll. I did too at first tbh.

Understood RobertFoster, no alas, it wasn't a troll - quite real.

i saw that post and thought nothing of it as 'IM NOT A HOMOPHOBE'... and it was a simple request.

I also read another thread during the week on a web host 365 and allegations of spamming - a thread i found interesting as spam is a threat to us all! . That was deleted too.
Thank god the moderator of this forum is 'only moderator of this forum' and not in government :) as then boys and girls we'd be in trouble...

Moderator - Ban me - as ive spoked whats on my mind, and I assume you are in disagreement with it.

    Bye everyone :)

Advice was requested because I'm about to commence work on a site for a gay bar, and not being gay myself, I thought the advice of someone who is gay and a web designer, would be beneficial.

Got to agree with that Hosting365 thread. I posted some good advice there about how to make a complaint about spamming. I spent some time researching it and even went to the bother of verifying with the Data Commissioner's office. If I had known it would have been erased I would have saved my post.

If a thread is becoming spammy or has potential for slander then use the Split thread option or delete the offensive posts. There is also the Recycle Bin if you want to move a thread somewhere else.

Damien : slander and libel only apply if they are not based on facts

I agree a moderator just deleting a thread (that many busy people took the time to write messages on) therefore dismissing thier opinions, time spend writing and researching thier posts is Unacceptable.

Ive seen many posts discussing companies/topics that are perhaps embarassing and that certain individuals could take insult to.

    Heres one I started
Backpacker would not be too impressed - please delete the thread

    Another one
Some very opinionated opinions here and owner of both sites got a bit of a doing - Please delete thread

Got a friend at 365 perhaps?
Not too fond of Gays perhaps?

Actually I don't think that's quite fair Chico. We all f*ck up now and then. If we didn't then life would be such a bore.

The question about the gay site should have been verified more to see was it a troll or at least moved to the LGB Forum.

I'm disappointed about the Hosting365 spam thread but I do agree that if there is material in it that could potentially get legal then it is better to close it. But I wouldn't delete it. Even if Hosting365 heavily sponsor boards.ie I think it only fair and balanced to allow people to discuss it's spamming.

Blacknight, yeah I know it's only slander or lible if false, but sometimes to find this out it has to go to court. That's messy.

What I don't understand is why boards would get in trouble - they should adopt a privacy statement or something (I can't see one if there is one already....)
    Privacy Statement

Boards has always have always been trust worthy, I find it a shame that a con *** can influence the removal of posts. I guess we know who runs the show around these parts.

    I will say no more.

I run a pretty busy forum - not as busy as Boards, but busy enough - and although I would certainly take posts that were blatantly libellous very seriously, the idea of deleting posts or locking threads because they might possibly become libellous at some point in the future is a tad Minority Report for my liking.

I'm afraid it's this kind of thing - among others - that made me feel it was time to step down as a mod on Boards. I simply don't want to be associated with this kind of policy and behaviour. I mean I get accused of being a fascist on Foot.ie regularly, and I can usually understand why, but this... this is ridiculous.

    short and sweet:

I have been modding this forum for quite some time and have always been fair and open to suggestions and comments. I dont go randomly deleting threads nor do I delete threads just because I dont agree with them. I also dont go around censoring posts unless I feel that they go against the best interests of boards and its readers.

Wrafter: you posted a VERY short post saying "gay webmaster required" basically asking people to PM you if they were gay and interesting in work.
    1. this is a webmaster forum, check under SOC for the WORK forum.
    2. it did indeed look like a troll post, I dont PM trolls to tell them why something was deleted. I apologise if your post was in earnest but .. why does the web designer HAVE to be gay?

    The Spam mail thread:
The original poster was satisfied with the answer he received and all was lovely then, as always the trouble started.

Blackknight wanted a clarification posted to avoid misunderstanding. I was informed that the details of the clarification were untrue. With no evidence to support either side I elected to remove the thread and so remove the need for either a clarification or any argument regarding the clarification itself. All major parties involved were informed of this reason and all agreed that it was necessary if not preferred.

That is all the explaination you are going to get. If it's not good enough for you, take it up with an admin.

LoLth, thank you for your response, it is appreciated.

To clarify, my client has request that I liaise with, or consult with, a designer who is gay as he wants to ensure that the site I design is in keeping with the tone of the bar. The bar is a gay friendly. I am simply satisfying my clients' requirement.

I don't believe my post would have caused discomfort for any reader.

Well, in that case I would suggest that you post on the lesbian/gay/bisexual board and possibly the work board. If it's just someone from the gay community (always think that brings images of all gay people living in one place) that you need to talk to and not necessarily emply then the l/g/b might be your best bet.

You'll find both under the SOC heading.

I do apologise for mistaking your post for a troll. It was extremely brief and was in essence asking anyone gay to PM you. Nothing to do with discomforting readers, just didnt seem enitrely appropriate for this board.
