I am soon moving over to the UK for a couple of years and was hoping that someone might know what the process is for importing a car to the uk - such as registration fees, tax etc...

It would be unusual for it to be worthwhile bringing a used car from Ireland to England. If you're getting a new car to bring over it can make more sense since the pre tax prices here are usually much cheaper. You basically buy the car here without registering it or paying VRT, you get a temporary registration known as ZZ plates that cover you for something between 24 and 48 hours to get the car to the boat, the AA adiminister these temporary registrations. You'll need a UK address and possibly a UK driving license to do this. The car will need to go through an Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test, similar to an MOT or NCT. Make sure whatever car you get is as close to UK spec as possible in case you ever decide to sell it over there.

Why bother? Sell your car here and then buy a much nicer one with lower mileage and properly looked after in the UK for the same money.
