  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,828 ✭✭✭Healio

    Here is a little teaser:
Name the horse who has ran in all of the following races and never won any of them:
Champion Hurdle, Irish Champion Stakes, St.leger, Ascot Gold Cup, The Arc, Breeders cup Classic.

Very good question. I think I know the answer...
Luke Comer's horse, Chimes At Midnight. Seems to run in a lot of big races even though he's well off the class in most of them. I remember him running in the Champion Hurdle, the Leger, the Ascot Gold Cup and the Arc. He's most likely ran in the Irish Champion and I'll just assume that he ran at the B.C. too.

chimes at midnight ran in the Turf Classic not BC Classic

    my questions:

name first Euro horse to win on dirt in Breeders Cup

name the last time 2 epsom derby winners faced each other? The time before that?

name the last (English) 2000 and 1000 Guineas winners not to finish another race after their classic success

name last 2 horses to win 2 legs of British Triple Crown (either colts' or fillies' versions)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 323 ✭✭Robin1982

    for a bonus:

Irish Group 1 winner, ran in BC Classic, last race was off 98 in a handicap hurdle?

Not sure about this but there was a French horse, Arcangues, who won the Classic in the early '90s but there was probably one from before that.
    Robin1982 wrote:

Kris Kin and High Chaparral in the '03 Arc.
Can't think of the previous time.

(Edit: Did some research to ease my mind and came up with...
Quest For Fame and Generous in the '91 Arc. Is that right?
    )
    Robin1982 wrote:

King's Best and Lahan (both in '00)
King's Best ran in the Irish Derby but was pulled up and retired due to his injury. Lahan never raced again after winning her 1000 Guineas.
    Robin1982 wrote:

    Kazzia ('02 Guineas and Oaks)
Can't remember any others in recent years so I have to go back to Nashwan (in '89?) but I suspect there may have been one since.

    Morgans wrote:
I think Norman Williamson rode her to win. Not too sure of the second jockey, take a stab at Shay Barry.

    1 st day correct
2nd day it was tommy treacy on board (beaten by khyriwani)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 323 ✭✭Robin1982

Arcangues won BC Classic in 93

Sheikh Albadou won the BC Sprint in 91 (he was the first Euro to win on dirt) and a few races later Arazi produced one of the most exciting performances of modern times in the Juvenile - the answer to this question could have been so different had Dayjur not advertised his claims for the Triumph in the previous year's BC Sprint.

You can view these performances at this fabulous site (recommend broadband):

    http://www.ntra.com/bc2004/bc_time_capsule.asp?year=1991

Note: Sheikh Albadou's link is incorrect - he is the correct link:

    mms://wmedia.ntra.com/NTRA/loBC_SPR_91.wmv

So, well done fr wishy washy

Crumbs, all your answers are correct, good stuff!

Clues for the bonus: a Godolphin horse, Irish Group 1 victory was an all-aged 10f race, artistic horse

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,828 ✭✭✭Healio

well i have two others, black sam bellamy or antonius pius.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 323 ✭✭Robin1982

    both 8's again!

Indeed the answer's full sibling (and stablemate) also ran in 8 consecutive G1s

    Paul Mac would know...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭Crumbs

Must surely have raced as a four-year old to have run in ten consecutive G1s.
That narrows it down a good bit and the first horse that comes to my mind is Powerscourt.

3 questions on the Cheltenham Festival. As usual, no googling, etc...

1 pointer - name the horse that finished 2nd in three consecutive Champion Hurdles.

2 pointer - name the only horse of at least the last 15 years to win the Champion Hurdle after having previously won the Supreme Novices Hurdle.

3 pointer - name the horses that have been at least placed in a race at each of the last three Festivals. I won't say how many there are but I'll give a clue to one of them - sounds like Mest Bate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Morgans

    Theatreworld

    Hors La Loi III

    are the first two.

Morgans' answers to the first two are correct.

Rooster Booster is one of the answers for the third but not Blowing Wind.

Forgot about Powerscourt but thats correct! The horse I was thinking about was Yesterday, whose sister Quarter Moon ran in 8 consecutive G1s the previous year.

Hawk Wing, Sholokhov ran in 9

The German horse, Paolini raced in 24 consecutive Group/Grade 1s - beat that?

Baracouda, yes. Hardy Eustace, no (didn't race at the 2002 Festival).

So that's Best Mate, Baracouda and Rooster Booster as answers so far. There are more.

The Cowboy, yes. (Placed in the 2002 Bumper, the 2003 Champion Hurdle and the 2004 Coral Cup.)
Cenkos, no. (Placed in the Champion Chase in 2002 and 2003 but only 4th last year.)

fantastic question. I backed at 50/1 when he was second to Spirit Leader. HAd a great chelt that season, but that would have topped it all.

Richdee was sixth in the 1982 gold cup behind the Dickensonn five.

Which horse carried out the favourite See More Business when pulling up in the Gold Cup?

Name the last entire to win the Champion Hurdle? What Group 1 race on the flat did he place in?

By the way, the answer to one of my previous questions (the 98-rated hurdler who won Irish flat Group 1) was Cezanne

He won the Irish Champion Stakes for Godolphin before setting off on a spectacularly unsucessful National Hunt career. Sandwiched between this was a spin as an infertile stallion.

I thought your question might have meant placing without winning in four consecutive festivals. I couldn't think of an answer for that but if winning is allowed then you can add the likes of Best Mate, Istabraq, Arkle and Golden Miller to the list. Probably a few more too.

Here's some new questions, sorry if there's any repeats, just joined...

1 Who is the only horse to win the same Grade 1 Chase twice in
    the same calendar year?

2 Which horse of the last twenty years had the dubious distinction of not only running in the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup and Grand National, but falling in all three.

3 Who was the last horse to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup having won a race earlier on at the same festival.

4 Who was the last French trained horse to run in the Champion Hurdle who wasn't trained by Francois Doumen?

5 The Cheltenham Gold Cup is run over 22 fences, but in which two consecutive years did the winners jump less than 22?

6 Which winner of a Cheltenham Festival race beat into the places future winners of the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup and Grand National.

7 Who was the last 13 year old to be placed in the Champion Chase?

8 Which two horses have run in the most grand nationals since the war?

9 In the void national of 1993, seven horses completed, who were they?

10 Which horse ran at nine consecutive festivals in the last twenty years.

11 Which horse of the last 25 years won one of the novice events (over hurdles or fences) at the festival at his second attempt as a second season novice.

12 Whose course record did Red Rum and Crisp annihilate in the 1973 Grand National?

13 Who was the last 14 year old to run in the Gold Cup?

14 Where did Large Action and the ill-fated French Holly win their only races over fences?

15 Who is the only horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the King George, the Martell Cup and the Pillar Chase?
