Anyone got an Rx-7?

    Hi all, I've just stumbled across this board via google.

    Just wondering if anyone in Ireland has an Rx-7 (or any rotary powered vehicle). I've had two myself previously and I'm thinking of getting one here. Are there some good Mechanics/parts suppliers for rotary engines in this country?

    I've only been living here for 6 months, so am still not too familiar with it all :)

    mazda dealer only for any parts.

    there is only bunch of them in Ireland, You are better off buying one in UK. Car will be serviced and have full service history. Most of the places here wouldn't touch RX7 engine.

    A mate of mine has one and bought it from a Jap import specialist. He hasn't had a problem getting people to work on it and has bought parts from eBay and from the US via forums there. I'll try and get some links but I'd doubt you will get rotary engine specailists here. I was going to buy an NSU Ro80 a while back from a guy in Wexford but was put off by the rotary engine

    A friend has a white veilside kitted one, that I worked on over the new year. His engine blew the week he got it, and some guy called Eddie in Bray rebuilt it. He has a lot of trouble, mainly cos its a single turbo conversion, and with all the gauges/hks fcon etc, the wiring is a complete mess!
    Quickest car I have ever been in, and that was when the engine was going down. He is running it in at the minute. Think it has about 400 odd bhp.

    Close...... but NiCr coatings are slightly less reflective than the sputtered coatings :D

    anyway,
    yeah, i never came across rotary engine specialists, some workshops will do the easy work but any mention of rotary engine made them go wild.

    so far i didn't have good experience with Mazda dealer during my MX6 and Xedos 6 ownership but still would consider RX7

    Thanks for the help so far. I've always done most of the work myself, but getting parts can be such a pain in the ****.

    Any mazda dealer in the city, eg Belgard motors should get you what you need provided you have a chassis number. Id advise against a jap one tho as I personally hate dealing with jap mazdas, any little thing takes days, even just gettin a price confirmation etc...

    Just a word of warning to you.

    Due to our great Irish Road Tax system the 1300cc RX-7/RX-8 are classed as having a 2.6 litre engine here, therefore road tax and insurance are a nightmare. mad.gif

    Lovely cars though. cool.gif

    The Ro80 might not be the prettiest classic but they had their place in motoring history. Its slightly off thread but I was trying to buy this recently too. I was also put off by its engine, but mostly by the cost of restoration. A prize for anyone who tells me what it is....

    My friends Rx7 is taxed as 1.8, as is the Rx8 a guy here in work has,
    and the Rx7 is insured as a 1.8 too, cos thats what his insurers put on the cert, so happy days. All this 2.6 stuff just never happened with anyone I know who has a rotary...dont know why.

    Mmm - tricky. Has something East-European about it, maybe? Or Scandinavian ? Has a bit of something like a '50s Saab (in a parallel dimension kind of way :D ).

    OK it's not eastern european or scandinavian. It's doesn't look British, Japanese or American. Doesn't look German either. So it's either Italian or French - I say it's French. Some kind of Panhard?

    Am I warm? :)

    Despite guessing most of the civilised world, you aren't close. Not a Panhard. This car was recently for sale in the midlands for €3,500.

    I have it! It's from the 1950's and has a two stroke engine. Not going to say anymore for the moment.

    Well done Ratchet! It is an Auto Union and it is a '59 model two door coupe. These were built in Ireland until 1961. The two stroke three cylinder engine was water cooled and very reliable. They had 'suicide' doors until '56 and changed to front-hinged as shown on this model. Attached is a pic from the Audi TT launch edition of Car magazine with comparisons drawn between two ground-breaking Audis.

    My wife still isn't talking to me for not buying this by the way...

    DKW/Auto-Union - wasn't that an East German manufacturer? Only asking as I have a DKW fiberglass boat, gullwing hull, definitely made by DKW in East-Germany in mid-70s.

    yeah,East Germany. They used the same engine in Trabant . I had a spin in one of them and is unforgettable experience. There is a reason why they call them soap boxes in Eastern Germany and Europe. No front seat belts due to the fuel tank position, which was on the front and in case of fire you had to be able to evacuate quickly
