registered users get three stars after a certain number of posts
mods get four stars (white)
admins get five gold stars
category mods get five white stars
hosted mods get three white stars
registered users get four pink stars

in my case I have set up an annual standing order between my bank and boards.ie's bank which wil pay the subscription automatically every year

just some things to remember though

be sure to let the admins know that you are doing this.
ask your bank to put a comment on the transaction which will appear on boards.ie's account. say your username for example.
