Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. If you have a cd writer you can just burn (relatively) small amounts of stuff onto cd's and just put that back on after. If you're gonna buy a new hd, you can put that in as a slave, transfer the stuff over and then format the master, it's relatively easy.

You only need to keep files that you want (work documents, porn collection, the usual ;) )

You might also wanna make sure you have a copy of your drivers, but you more then likely have them on CD anyway.

As Wez says you could just burn any files you have to CDRW if there's a lot, Floppy is there's minor text documents or a Flash Drive (dam handy things!) if you're got a couple in between :)

As for installing Windows, if it's XP then the CD will do everything you need.

And as for a second HDD you could install that, install Windows on it, and then install your old HDD as a slave and just take the data off it as you need it.

    cheers lads

i think i'll get a 2nd HD and intall it to the slave and put win 2000 on it o 'ill have two operating systems....

i have 60GB HD at the mo but i'm only using 10% of it so i'll back up what i need on to CDRWs (my porn lol)

i don't have win xp or 2000 on disc but can get them handy enough, so if i format my HD will it remove everything ? ie win xp ?

is this how i format the HD ?

    My computer>>> Local Disk (C:)>>> format ?

    is it that easy ?

    thanks

you can't format a disk like that from within windows because it's in use.

once you have all the data safely off it you can just stick in the windows xp or 2000 cd and it will ask you if you want to format it anyway.

word of advise though, if you really want 2000 & xp on at the same time (although there's really no need for it unless you're testing software or using older software that refuses to run on xp (which is practically nil if you use the compatability mode in XP) then install 2k first, making sure you leave some room on the hard drive (unformatted room) you put xp on.

then when it comes to installing xp it will do everything for you more or less with regard to dual booting, even creating a little boot menu for you.

but if you put on xp first it can be hard to get 2000 on unless you have a boot manager which is a whole other kettle of fish.

do a google for 'dual boot windows 2000 xp' and you'll find lots of info.

good luck, and if you get stuck then you know where we are.

p.s. my most valuable pearl of wisdom with regard to formatting and re-installing windows is, that whether you have broadband or a dial up modem, make sure you have a working copy of your modem drivers for the OS you plan on using or you'll be fecked from the word go!

the one drive you casn't download off the net on a fresh pc is the one for your modem! :D

Why in god's name do you wanna dual boot XP Pro and Win98 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭Wez

Yeh, that's a good point, I'd understand Xp and 2000 pro, but not 98.. EXPLAIN YOURSELF SOLDIER!

98's proberly cause you more problems then it is worth. Just go for XP on it's own... or as Wez says 2k/XP if you MUST ;)

whatever you decide (and for whatever reasons) make a point of always installing the oldest operating system first. i.e. 98 > 2k > xp. also 98 is a biatch hen it comes to partitioning and will wipe ANYTHING & EVERYTHING on it's host drive if you even blink, so don't go leaving anything on it you want to keep and think you can partition 98 around it or you'll be sorry!

One of the main reasons people will want a dual boot with the above 2 OS running is for using phone unlocking and flashing software

A lot of that software does not like XP etc
