You can get transit in Dublin for well under €100 in Dublin, you just need to know where to look.

From the RIPE database it looks like Magnet have connectivity from Colt, the INEX and they're using Hibernia Atlantic to connect to Boston where they take transit from CTC. CTC take their transit from Cogent and Wiltel.

€100 - if you are paying anything like that for any serious volume you are being robbed!!! COLT are providing most of the telco services - saw Young Gary singing their praises a few times now!

Contention is a marketing tool and a cost saving tool. It does make a lot of sense for a DSL provider to use contention at the back of the DLSAM to reduce the bandwidth requirement to the DSLAM as it makes sense to reduce the guaranteed available bandwidth to the Internet well below the line speed.

However, what EXACTLY contention is, you will most probably NOT find out from any of the ISPs!

Irish Broadband uses the term "contention" because they claim they have a lower contention than their competitors. Eircom wouldn't use the term if they could. But all in all it is totally over-hyped. Ask Eircom or Irish Broadband (or any other) sales person WHERE the contention is measured and if it applies to the complete network and you will hear loads of stummering and most likely an incorrect answer. But can you check it??? Not a chance!! Is anyone checking it? Only a neutral body (maybe the ComReg??) could. So the answer is NO!

I do not agree with eircomtribunal, by the way, to me contention is the worst case relationship between line speed and download speed from the Internet. Therefore there are three or more potential bottlenecks and the LOWEST guaranteed bandwidth within the network of the service provider is the one that counts.

A definition for contention can be found here http://217.155.161.234/TechDocs/Telecom_General/adsl1.htm

Don't forget to read the small print at the bottom!!
