My son turns 16 in April and as I'm a biker he wants 1 too. He likes the Yamaha TZR 50cc. Does anybody know what insurance would be like for him (Third Party F&T).

    Cheers

Thats a fast bike. Might be a problem getting insured because and his age, the bike has gears and its a sports model. Nice though.
What about a moped. Mite be good to start small

5400, I think I'll wait before I get him 1, cheers Chalk and spunkymunky, advice about the pink taken on board aswell. I quite like the look of them myself, I might get myself 1 now, maybe a 250.

Does anyone then know of a moped with low insurance group, but he doesn't want it to look like 1, he wants it to look like a bike istead.

    Cheers again

Cheers Chalk, sounds perfect, I'll get him to look at 1, if he's worried about the noise he can always try change the exhaust.

    Cheers again

Sachs make some nice small motorbikes see: http://www.sachs-bikes.de/en/category.php?brand=Sachs-Bikes
The new MadAss is a cool looking thing (imo) and as its a monoposto, insurance will be lower again as its exempt from the pillion passenger liability thats sent bike premiums skyrocketing of late.
I'd love to have one of the 125's for tearing around town

^^ What the hell is that?!

Just get an Aprilia RS 50 and insure it as an SR 50... "Woops, musta gotten the letters wrong"

Why bother getting "insured" at all then?

Im selling my 03 Derbi Atlantis, Great little bike Group 1 insurance, fast enough to 60mph at a push easily 55mph & not too noisey either.

I would not bother with this bike. They rot within a year. I saw an 03 model and every single bit of exposed metal was red with the rust. Try selling that on when he is sick of it!

I can see the appeal of this bike to a 16yo, its a really good looking bike, but considering the crazy insurance, it would be better to get him a scooter, some of which look quite cool and will have storage space etc. Then he can get a proper small capacity sportsbike in a few (Yeah!) years when insurance is more reasonable.
