sorry rear shocks, maybe rough roads? anyway kwikfit will replace them cheaply

Its hard to tell from the pic but it looks like a split shock mounting which is unlikely to be causing the knocking unless the shock is actually loose. Jack the car off the ground at that corner and open the boot - you should be able to see where the shock is bolted at the top of the suspension turret (it might have a rubber or platic cap) and see if it is loose.

These are just the rubber bump stops at the top end fo the damper/strup. Without these the tube woud hit metal when and if the load was sufficient to compless the spring totally. You shoudl have them at both front and rear, either ont he top of the damper rod or somewhere in the suspension.
The lower lip fo them is often shaped to hold an inverted dirt guard. this is to keep dirt from getting on and into the rod you mentioned and seal it slides through.

And I doubt they (the rubber bits) are causing a knocking sound.
However, it is likely the damper itself, the tubular bit the shiny rod goes into has leaked all the damping oit/fluid and it is allowing the suspension to bounce about wildly, thus in turn allowing it to hit off this rubber end stop.

If this damper is not surrounded by a coil spring it is easy to remove and repair. If it is part of the rear suspension spring assy, then it gets a bit more complicated. Given your question. I'd recommend you have someone else repair/rebuild it.

Might have been better to have removed the wheel when taking the photo, could see more of the setup.
