Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

At the moment i have PC to Modem to wall socket. Modem to wall socket is a 4m cable which runs threw two rooms. I need to get rid of this and i cant put it under carpet coz no carpet and my ma wont let me pin it to wall.

I have a router and a wireless card on the way but was wondering if i can have it set up so the router does not need to be connected upto the pc wi the cable. Reason being so i can get rid of the 4m cable.

So can i set the router up while connected to pc, then disconnect it wi cable, then install the wireless card, then will that work?

    Thanks

What type of modem is it? Broadband modem or 56k?

If it is a broadband modem, you should be able to do away with the cable since you have a wireless router/card on the way - there are plenty of posts in the broadband forum on how to do this.

If it is a 56k modem, it can be done, but not with Wifi. You would have to use Bluetooth. BT dongle on the PC, with a bluetooth 56k modem connected to the wall. All data is sent over the bluetooth connection.

I think expansys have one or two of these bluetooth modems, though they tend to be over a 100 Eurons, plus the cost of the bluetooth dongle at 30-40 Eurons.

Yeah, you will be fine. You will need to re-configure your broadband modem as a bridge, not a big deal.

Hi, is the D-Link wireless router specified in the earlier posting compatible with Eircom home broadband?
Specifically: can I connect it to my telephone socket and expect it work to work with my Dell Laptop (internal wireless card) without too much mucking around?

In case it is not obvious I have an existing broadband connection with Eircom and use their std modem.

I would be very surprised if it wasn't.

Your broadband modem probably has an ethernet and a USB connection available. You would plug the ethernet cable into the back of the modem and then into the internet port of the wireless router. The important thing, as I mentioned above, is to re-configure the modem as a bridge, which is very easy to do (well, at least the Esat one I am using was).

I have just set mine up today using the dlink mentioned above and it works ok. It was kinda hard setting it up but the website support has the solutions.

To set up bridge for netopia modem look at: http://www.netopia.com/support/technotes/hardware/CQG_020.html

And to set up the router to work with DSL look at: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=997&question=DI-604%20/%20DI-614+%20/%20DI-624%20/%20DI-754%20/%20DI-764%20/%20DI-774%20/%20DI-604_revE%20/%20%20DI-614+_revB%20/%20DI-624_revC%20/%20DI-774_revB%20/%20DI-514%20/%20DI-514_revC

Well this is what i ahd to do to get mine to work, might be an easier way i dont know.
