I know its hard to put just 5
    but still
what 5 albums have been the most influencial to you?
    most memorable etc?

    mine would be......
    1. Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell (first decent album I ever heard & got me into metal)
    2. Metallica - Master of Puppets (It was a given they would feature, this album holds more memories than others for me though)
    3. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes (Great album as was the follow-up..)
    4. Deicide - Serpents of The Light (Probably my favourite Deicide album, Got me through a lot of **** )
    5. Vital Remains - Dechristianize (only released last year but without doubt one of the best albums I've ever heard)

    and yourselves?

Megadeth - Rust In Peace - opened my eyes to technical music, listened to it every day for almost a year. Every second of this album is worthwhile.
Obituary - Cause Of Death - just a perfect blend of brutality and musicality, a fantastic celebration of Metal.
Death - Human -one of the greatest albums of all time, I remember the first time I listened to it on my walkman on the 44C coming home from the Sound Cellar in total shock, amazed that music could be made like that (to truly get an idea of just how much of a progression this album was, just listen to the excellent Spiritual Healing first).
Cynic - Focus - Still possibly my favourite album, it always gives you something new with every listen. There is nothing out there that comes close.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath - I bought this album (original gatefold vinyl) for £1 back in 1989 from a mate. It's the album that every Metal band owes their careers to. It's raw and groundbreaking and the sound of the rain at the beginning still takes me back to the first time I listened to it. 35 years on it's still unequalled.

    Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Suicidal Tendencies - Feel Like Sh*t/De Ja Vu - there have been better ST albums, but this was the first one I got and I played it forever

Megadeth - Peace Sells - my first introduction to them, and to this day this album will always get a prefered playing over any other Megadeth album

Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction - literally a "sick" piece of work

Faith No More - The Real Thing - the moment I saw Epic, and Mike Patton - I knew I either wanted to be him or kill him - something stalkeresque anyways :)

That was one hell of a tough top 5 - and even still, I aint happy with what I picked

Come on, most people can't tell the difference between the music of the bands above, never mind the CD covers.

In regards to Dimebag Darrell he was hardly the most famous guitarist in the world was he?

Yes, if you actually do listen to the albums you'll find that there is quite a big difference in the music. And if you played an instrument you would notice the difference also. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to notice the difference in the album covers.

He's not the most famous, but he's up there among the most famous guitarists in the world. You mightn't know him but I assure you that plenty of people do...

Okay, now to get the thread back on topic....

My 5 best albums (in no particular order) :

    1. Metallica - Ride The Lightning. I still remember the first time one of my mates played me this. Personally it's my favourite Metallica album, absolutely brilliant from start to finish. A timeless piece of top-quality metal.

    2. Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction. Again, another favourite from quite a while ago. This one has dated a bit but there's nothing quite like driving around singing/shouting along to "Welcome To The Jungle" etc. Even if you do get a lot of funny looks :-)

    3. Nightwish - Once. A more recent one. I first saw their video for "Nemo" at 4am on Kerrang or Scuzz or something one night. I was half asleep but woke up immediately. Unlike Appetite For Destruction, it's VERY difficult to sing along to this one....

    4. Fear Factory - Demanufacture. Just when I thought I was able to play fast, along comes Dino Cazares and of course more recently Christian, the bass player. While all their albums are awesome, this to me is their best

    5. Spineshank - The Height Of Callousness. I don't know anyone else who likes this band so I figured I'd throw them up here :-) This is their 2nd album and easily their best!

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Metallica-Master of Puppets: I just loved this album. From the opening to Battery right through to the end. I always felt this was one album that wasn't finished though. I always think there's another half to it.

Opeth-Blackwater Park: This is just incredible. From the angriest screaming and double bass-pounding metal to those acoustic interludes that make this album so diverse and intriguing, everything is just perfect.

Incubus-S.C.I.E.N.C.E.: Intriguing, from Brandon Boyd's poetic lyrics to the jazz influenced guitar of Mike Einziger and the crazy experimental sounds, this album is one to be rediscovered over and over again.

Megadeth-Rust In Peace: This is one of the more technical pieces of music I own. It's so interesting to hear how people can devote so much of their lives to perfecting an instrument so as to create music as good as this record.

The Distillers-Sing Sing Death House: This is a little different but I think this is just all out, no-nonsense punk rock. All speed and fury, this is an element of music I love to the hilt and try to capture in everything I do with my own music.

That was hard. I had a few more but these will do for now I guess.

Did you forget to take your cop on pills today?
You say you don't even know who Dimebag is, so you clearly haven't heard ANY of the bands in question. Talk about idiotic statements!

As for judging books by their cover (on in this case CDs), here's two bands that made some racidally dissimilar music, but if you asked someone who didn't know who they were already, I'm sure it would be completely impossible to tell which is which:

AC/DC - Back In Black This is a must have album. I was 13 when it got out and it blew me away by storm.
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast another milestone in the history of rock.
Kiss - Creatures of the night after some dodgy albums, Kiss got back on track with this one.
Motörhead - 1916 More melodic than most of their stuff but still hard. "1916" titletrack showed a very different Lemmy and co. - great
ZZ TOP - Afterbruner Very mainstream-ish but also very unique in style

Just stop posting on the Rock/Metal board if you're going to say things like that... If you're even half into metal you should at least have heard his name and most of the new bands in metal music today have probably got some of his influence in them, so seriously dude, just shut it...

Also, PORNAPSTER just posted his albums in a different way... No need to stray away from the point and post negative comments at him... ;)

My top 5 would have to be...

    (in no real order)

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
    Slayer - South of Heaven
    Megadeth - Rust in Peace
    Metallica - Kill em all
    PanterA - CFH

I'm probably blatantly leaving out albums that I admire just as much as the above but that list is what comes to mind...

Ok Ok Won't mention him again.

Good to see some Rock Albums in the later peoples choices as opposed to just metal.

Ritual De Lo Habitual is THE greatest Rock Album ever.
