I have a few questions about recording from vcr to pc.
1)the 5900xt has video in. am i right in assuming that i can record from video to my pc with this card.
2)if yes are there any better programs than the ones that come with the gcard
3)what video standard would the vcr be(i.e. is it pal_b, pal_g, pal_d, etc.) or is that different for different vcrs

    all advice welcome

If you have video in, you should be able to capture video. Check if it's S-Video or composite; most video-in-equipped have no onboard tuner, so you'll have to peel off the video feed using a SCART-to-suitable-plug-type-thing adaptor. Similarly, you'll have to plug the audio channels into the line in on the sound card; this usually means getting a SCART->3 RCA's (yellow, red, white (or black) - yellow is video, the other two are left and right audio, can't remember which way 'round) and then two back-to-back RCA adaptors and a 2xRCA -> 3.5mm stereo "headphone" type jack to shove into your sound card's line in.

On the other question, I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the UK and Ireland are on PAL-I, for all the difference it seems to make...

I was only playing around with this myself yesterday, the best program I've come across so far is VirtualDub (http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net) ... nice opensource app with tons of features. Weather or not it's compatable with your capture driver is (according to the readme) is a bit hit-and-miss... worked on my Geforce 6600GT anyway.
