Also, the Irish red hair and freckles thing actually came from the Norse invaders of Ireland...

    Will you dirty ol plunderer!!!

It depends what you mean by the term Celt doesn't it? If you are referring to peoples who spoke a Celtic language i.e. Irish Gaelic, then any script which originated with them could be described as a Celtic script, for example the kind of lettering used in mediaeval manuscripts written in Irish.

Hello everyone by the way, I've been lurking on this board for a while, was waiting till I had photos before I introduced myself...but I'm really tired and I can't work out how to attach pics at the minute...(yes I know it probably isn't that hard but I'm hopeless).

people bandy about the term "celtic writing" in tattoo shops constantly.

Usually they mean Old English, when they find out what its called they go "uh, I don't want anything English on me!". Then I explain its German, they proceed to get something in German script, in the English language.

"Celtic" is not a catch-all term for Irish. If one was looking for an Irish script, you'd more or less be limited to Insular/Uncial typeface, which was a variant on Latin letters, developed in England...

If you wanted, I suppose you could (an many do) go for ogham, although its questionalbe how closely you could translate most phrases into it.

My point is, why be all pointed about getting something "Irish", when one isn't that clear on what "Irish" is?

Get what you like the look of, its a tattoo, not a political statement.

I've been looking to get a tattoo for some time now. But i want to be sure I got the right one, i'm awkward at the best of times, and some i love one minute, I'll hate the next. Hense why i'm going slow. I was also looking at doing my own design, I've always been leaning towards a tribal style design and have got most of an outline work up at the minute,

i have got two questions though,
firstly, any recommendations on which studio to approach for tribal stuff around dublin?
also, i know some artists might not use somebody elses design, is this likely to be the case here? Basically I have a resonable outline done, and I'd kinda hop that the artist could work up the shading. i was thinking of more black and grey (or maybe blue) instead of solid colour, but I defo think simple is better with shading on a tribal design.

I agree, it must be frustrating when people use such vague and inaccurate terms to describe what they want. I just wanted to make the point that if you did want a celtic style script then something of the Insular Irish variety would arguably fit the bill.

I also find the idea that Irish people should have Irish tattoos a little bizarre, not to mention a tad narrow minded.

With regards to the Chinese tattoo on non Chinese people discussion, surely what matters is that you understand to some degree what you are getting permanently marked on your body without having to rely on someone else's translation.

Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble, it's late and I'm getting sleepy.....

    Hi Mellor

Theres nowhere in Dublin (that I'm aware of) that specialize in tribal per se. Just go to the one with the friendly atmosphere and great portfolio.
If you go to any decent artist they should be more than willing to work on your design with you and give you advice on what elements of the design that you should change to match and suit your body type.
You sound as if you've considered this tattoo for some time now. What made you settle on tribal as your tattoo of choice?
Take a gander on www.bmezine.com for more info and examples for inspiration.

I'm not sure why, just always appealed to m
I've had a look on bmezine already, to be honest I thought some of the tribal stuff was poor
any of the Dublin portfolios I've seen online had no tribal stuff, so I'm a bit wary of somebody who may not have done it, even if they are great at another area or style

I'm guessing from your description that you're going more towards the popular style of the neo-tribal (wavey / spikey / thick black or shaded areas)? As opposed to maori or polynesian tribal yes? Have a google for leo zulueta. He's basically the godfather of "modern" tribal, Rory Keating also has good work in this area however both are US based but they might point you in the right direction design wise.
I find it hard to believe that you cant find much tribal in the portfolios around Dublin. Tribal stuff is not that high on the complexity scale for the most part. What studios did you go to? Surely Art Tattoo in Temple bar or Snakebite or Zulu or Colourworks would be able to handle your needs. As I think I said previously, theres no one that I know of that caters purely or specializes in tribal. Most of the "tribal" stuff in Dublin is picked off a wall at the end of the day.

Yeah, I mant to say that previously, neo-tribal

I think thats the problem, because its not that complex, its not really "shown off". But non-complex doesn't mean easy, i've seen more messed up tribal designs that even half decent ones. While I wasn't expecting a tribal specialist in dublin, was looking more for a proven track record, best for black and grey etc.

Mariusz (sp?) in Snakebite would be my top pick for what you're after. He might be away but call in and have a look at his portfolio.

Mariusz is back in poland for the foreseeable future

He'd be mine too, and did both of mine, custom designed the phoenix for me. But as Will said, he's in Poland and it's uncertain when he'll be back at the minute.

Looks like a rose and thorns to me.

As promised here are my tattos.

I cant take a picture of the panter on my shoulder but you all have probably seen millions of them at this stage..I have attached one that is quite similar..

The second is one that is similar to the japenese dragon I got covered up..

    free_dragon_tattoo_01s.jpg

The third is the heart which I would like to get covered up..

And the fourth is my favourite. I loved it. I think the tattooist's name was Mono and she was in Sacred Art in Temple Bar.. It took 6 hours to do. But it was worth every penny and every minute!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 743 ✭✭✭northdubgal

Finally got a pic of my panther.. Really dont like it at all.

I am going to see if I can get a cover up done on it.

I got such a good one done on the dragon but I wouldnt want it to be too big on my shoulder though..

I just have to go and get some good ideas...

Y'know, it's just occurred to me that I never put mine up here!

So this is literally seconds after getting it done. Ignore the odd angle and lack of face! I was twisting around to show my friend, hence the angle, and my face was all sweaty, what with it being Thailand and all! ha

    fiiitattoo.jpg

It does look off in this pic, but if you turn your head sideways, you'll see that all the stars are pointing up towards my wrist. :)

Unfortunately, it's not as wonderfully sharp anymore. It bled quite a bit into the surrounding tissue (somewhat to do with placement, somewhat a heavy handed artist me thinks :() but there's not a lot I can do about it now.
It doesn't look terrible, but a little less defined, and I still love it anyway. :)

Have you ever thought about decorating them a little???
While I'm not the biggest fan of stars I think they should never just be outlined, but to each there own :)
    P.s. Germany sucks ;):P

Nopers. At the mo, I like em just as they are :) I wouldn't be against it though if I found a small, subtle idea.
I know every tom, dick and tahlula jumped on the band wagon and got stars the past few years, but this one was planned for 10 years (I take my time, right? :p) and besides, it's my name! (part of my surname anyways, and no, I ain't throwing that info out on the interwebz ;)) So I think I have a right to it! haha

P.S your feeble attempt at mocking me sucks! ;)
