Here's a basic guide I've written, it's biased and only based on my own opinions, most things here are subject to debate etc.

First of all, planes are the way to go if you're new to the hobby. Many will tell you otherwise but unless you have alot of money....stick to planes for starters.

    1. The flying club. This is the first thing you have to find. Learning by yourself is very hard and (in my case anyways), ends up costing alot more money. There is a fairly comprehensive list of irish clubs with websites here. If there are no flying sites listed near you then don't fret, just post on the board and someone might know of a local club.

    2. The model. This is essential because...well you want to fly don't you? :) . Don't even think of buying that cool stuntplane you saw in the magazine - you have to learn first! Go into a model shop near you (again, post on the board if you don't know where any are), and enquire about getting a trainer. Most model shops offer beginner deals with a trainer, a smallish 2 stroke engine, a transmitter and all the electronics (everything you need to get started). These usually cost around 400-500 euro.

    3. The learning. For this you need an experienced flyer (ie someone who can fly confidently without fear of crashing, anyone with an A cert is grand). Most clubs have a few people who train for free but be patient - they arent getting paid so they don't want to spend all their time at the field training :) .

That's about it, I'll continue updating this with more information over time but that's all for now.

    Welcome to model flying,
    Fobia.
