Basically post links to all your favourite Open Source Software and a brief description of what it is/does.

I'll kick off with some of the classics

Apache a webserver(most popular in the world!).
    MySQL database software.
    PHP Dynamic web scripting language.
Linux Operating system! it comes in many flavours here are a few of the most popular; Redhat, Debian, SuSe, Mandrake.

Open Office Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation software.

    Firefox a real web browser!

    Thunderbird mail client.

FileZilla Ftp client i really like.

The Gimp: Image editor - similar to photoshop.

Perl: The Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister. A scripting language and so much more.

CVS & Subversion: Version control. More of a developer kinda thing.

phpMyAdmin: PHP (web) based administration tool for MySQL databases.

VIM: THE text editor. (Not for the faint of heart!)

    FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD.

Varying flavours of a unix-based OS.

FreeBSD is the most popular of the three. OpenBSD is probably the most secure OS in popular useage at the moment. NetBSD runs on a massive array of different types of hardware.

bloat (http://bloat.sourcefource.net), a handy Perl script that will automatically extract many different archive types. Makes sure it extracts to it's own directory as well.

Python (http://python.org) A very nice object orientated programming language that I've just started using.

There's definitely no OS software for divx conversion - it's a proprietary format. There might be one to Xvid though.

Probably best on a separate thread. IIRC every so often SAGE or better still TAS books have an introductory offer of about €100.
TBH you might be better off with paper or a spreadsheet if it's very low volume by the time you take into account the learning curve. If you have an accountant you could their advice too.

I'm using Windows 2000. Want to install Linux on an old pc so might get GNUcash ifI get that done.

Don't want to get an accountant - did paper accounts years ago for my ex's business without one, so will go it alone as usual. It's just more fun to do it on computer. Will look out for a cheap TAS as covered that in a Business Studies course last year. €100 is less than paying an overpriced local accountant!

    Thanks people :)

Yes, there is open source software for DivX conversion... Mplayer plus some open-source DivX libraries should do the trick
