I use lots of Open Source software :), usually do a search on www.sf.net if I need a particualr app.

My favourites so far (no doubt I'm missing a few)

    Mozilla - browser/email suite

    TEXT [/URL]

    ASFRecorder
BusSched - Dublin Bus timetables for Palm OS (other OSes too)
DScaler Deinterlacer/Scaler - viewer for TV cards
    FileZilla - FTP client/server
Get Mail.com - perl script to download mail.com inbox to text (mbox) file
Gnucleus - P2P (superseded by Shareaza)
    MD5summer - Win MD5 file hash utility
Media Player Classic - used as part of K-Lite Codec Pack Mega merges bloated Realplayer/Quicktime etc into one lil player.
NetTime - sync pc to a time server
Notepad++ - deadly source code editor with syntax highlighting and autocomplete
Palm Datebook Converter - convert Palm datebook to text file
    Palm OS Emulator
    PDFCreator
    Shareaza - P2P inc. BitTorrent/Gnutella
    Ultr@VNC - Control computer remotely
    WinMerge - File diff'er

    That's not open source.

Kismac, possibly the best wireless stumbler in the world in what it can do, only limited by the OS it runs on (OSX) and its poor support for Apple's recent cards.

mlmac - good OSX gui for:

mldonkey - cross platform, cross network filesharing client. Written in Objective CAML, of all things...

Pe - The Programmers Editor. Abandoned and then opensourced as its author moved from BeOS to Windows. Decent notepad, incredible HTML editor

Kino - DV movie camera tool for Linux and I guess the BSD's. Works with my DVD player as the Firewire data source (not got a camera, yet) on my Vaio and my iBook, which is more than Sonic and iMovie do on their 'native' OS's

ffmpeg's libavcodec and libavformat - supports virtually every media codec in existance, including preliminary support for Windows Media 9/10, most Quicktime and some RealMedia formats. Is used as the core of:

VLC, Xine and mplayer. Three excelent, highly portable media players. mplayer is the best on x86 just because it can thunk in Windows codecs to use them, although its a bit illegal...

And while its not software, the Wikipedia. Thats GFDL'ed....

Are you taking the pi$$? Do you have any idea what Open Source means? In fact, considering that you recommend Limewire - do you know what a computer is?

Knoppix (www.knoppix.net) is a Linux distribution that boots directly from CD. This is an excellent option for those of us with aging laptops and small hard drives!!! Also good for technophobes who dont want to mess with dual boots and HD partitions etc. "From zero to Linux in 5 minutes" and that cant be bad...

    But my favourites are...

Firefox & Thunderbird (of course!!!), and eMule.
