A elderly female friend called into me to say she was looking at a car in Renualt garage over the weekend on her own and ended up buying something she didnt really want.
She paid a 500 deposit on a car - a Renault Clio 2001 that will cost her 11000 in total including the bank interest on the loan (ripoff price).
Aparently the price was 1000 cheaper until she said there was a tradein - then the sticker price on the car was a misprint but !! thats another story :O total rippoff.

Anyway *ignoring how wise* this was or not to sign up there and then - does anyone know where i can find out here rights for her - she would _really_ _really_ like not to either buy the car or loose deposit if possible. Is it a case of just being really nice to the garage and hoping they allow her her money back or does she actually have a cooling off rights like when you buy on line etc??

She must have known at the time she didnt want it as she asked if there was a cooling off period - she was given a not very straight answer from him.

    Links would be great.... cheers.

As far as the wrong price being on the sticker, its the usual "invitation to deal" or whateverits called. They are entitled to make mistakes and are not obliged to sell at the price quoted. Not sure where the law stands on deposits.

Btw. the going rate for a 01 clio seems to be as low as €7000 and a maximum of €9000 http://www.cbg.ie

thanks for the site - got this from there

"When buying or selling a car it is always useful to know how much the car in question is currently being bought or sold for elsewhere in Ireland. For this reason we have devised a way for you to find out, using live examples of cars currently on sale, to estimate how much you might sell or expect to pay for your car. "

"Average Price for 2001 RENAULT Clio: €8,450"

She is being charged 8000 PLUS her old car (value old car given was 1500). So Renault Blanchardstown is within tolerance I suppose - but at high end of prices.

Anyways - anyone else know about cooling periods in Ireland? In UK I googled it is 3 days on cars.
She is really upset about all this.

    Thanks -

Oh - thanks - I'd forgotton to post updates -
We rang Consumer Affairs on monday and they said basically yer screwed - you are not entitled to a return, credit or anything.
But we asked the garage owner nicely and he was sooo understanding and gave her a full refund on the deposit. All happy.
    cheers :)

The sticker mistake is the same as a price tag so it is an "invitation" rather than a contract.

However, once she paid a deposit she is entering a contract and she should have some documentation with the price agreed.

A trade in will always affect the price and she should have flagged this up from the start.

    Anyway nothing beats shopping around!
