Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

WiFi Router question

    Hi,

I have NTL BB at home, I have an Ethernet cable modem. I recently bought a laptop with a WiFi card.

A friend of mine has the eircom DSL wireless router (Netopia Cayman 3347W). Is it possible to use this router with my current setup? i.e. could I take the cable modem Ethernet output, plug that into one of the 4 ports in the Netopia router, and get it to route traffic to another PC plugged into another Ethernet port and also the laptop over the WiFi.

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but if I use a crossover cable between the modem and the router would this work?

    Thanks.

    I use a netgear router www.netgear.com http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGT634U.php

and it works fine with NTL :-)

Komplett has some good deals on wireless routers !!

Its simple, plug in the router into the Cable modem and check settings, as per the manual.

The router will auto assign an IP to the pc's or laptops connected and buda bing your all on !! there is 4 lan ports to the router too........ ;-)

As far as I know you don't even have to use a xover cable. They usually autosense the cable type. Shouldn't be a problem either way.

I'll give it a go without a crossover cable. Cheers.

Well I tried it as suggested above, plugged the cable modem output into one of the LAN ports (not a crossover cable). The router just sits there in a state "waiting for DSL" which of course it's never going to get! I dont have a crossover cable to try it with. But surley the router is still going to sit in this state...

Maybe this is a non starter?

I think it may be. From checking the net it seems that the netopia is a a full all in one in that it contains a dsl modem. Now I emphasise I am no expert on this stuff but I imagine to get your set up to work you would need to disable to dsl modem part of the netopia and use the 'pure' router part of it.
What you need is a wireless router like Drapper has given details of in his post.

Yeah, that's what i thought myself, but it was worth a shot! I didn't see an option to "disable" the DSL modem...

    Cheers.

No you can't do this. You need to get a Wireless Broadband router. Go to the networking section on Komplett and under the Wireless router section take a look at 'Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router 54 Mbps 802.11g, WPA, 4P switch'. That has everything you need in the one box.

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router 54 Mbps are good but the 'Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router 54 Mbps cards' conflict with some laptops !! HP and Compaq. Google it and you will see.............
