Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'd be interested in similar films, but not necessarily available on DVD, esp. Scandinavian ones.
I've seen Lola Rennt, Absolute Giganten, 101 Reykjavík, Amelie.

Lukas Moodysson's other movies, Together and Lilya 4-Ever are both spectacular. Even if Lilya 4-Ever has this nasty way of destroying your faith in humanity. Take it from me, don't watch this movie on a Sunday afternoon with a hangover.

Thanks simu, I'll get this. I had heard of it a while ago and meant to get it but I had forgotten about it.

Seems to be along the lines of My Summer of Love?

I was in the same boat towards the end of last year. I got a bit tired of all the Asian films I was watching and decided to dig into what Europe had to offer. Some of these have already been mentioned but these are what I've found to be masterpieces:

Last night I watched Ballad of a Soldier - a Russian film. Brilliant.
    The 400 Blows
    Amélie
    Stalker - Andrei Tarkovsky
    The Battle Of Algiers
    Das Boot
    Amarcord
Fúcking Åmål and every other Moodysson (having seen his latest yet though)
Good bye, Lenin! - Maybe not a masterpiece but very watchable
    La Grande illusion
    Irreversible
    À bout de souffle
    Bande à part
Lars von Trier's tv series - Riget (The Kingdom)
    A Short Film About Killing
    M
    Jean de Florette
Nid de guêpes - not a masterpiece but it never get's mentioned anywhere and is a very good action film.
    The Return
    Rififi
    Run Lola Run
    Le Samouraï
    The Wages of Fear
    The Bicycle Thief

    etc. etc. etc....

Just a heads up, Pretty Village, Pretty Flame is an excellent film about the Yugoslavian conflict.

Yes! Pretty Village Pretty Flame - I'd almost forgotten I'd seen that one - you are right, excellent film.

Another film I loved was a German film called "The bridge", little older, but excellent movie. About a few young teenagers called up to fight in the last few days of World War II. Anti-war movie slightly reminding me of All quiet on the western front.

Indeed, it's an extremely tense thriller, but that "Based on a true story" thing should be taken with a pinch of salt. The concept for the film was based on the Stanford Prison Experiment, but it's purely a fictional work as reguards to the exents that happen in the film.

Anythign by François Ozon, especially Sitcom, 8 Femmes and Gouttes d'Eau sur Pierres Brûlantes. Lovely dark comedy. *checks collection* There are tons of excellent French comedies, though I don't know how funny they'd be with subtitles. Les Invasion Barbares is a very nice Canadian film. Kirikou is a beautiful cartoon in a non-Disney stylee.
