Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    team news:

Tim Howard starting, with Ricardo on the bench, no Carroll at all!
    Injury or dropped for good?

    Rooney also to start.

That'll give him something to think about.

Its only a pity that Ricardo has not played that often. Howard was on goal for the reserves a couple of weeks ago and Sir Alex watched him concide 5 goals 3 of which were down to him.

The sooner a new keeper is sorted out the better.

Howards positioning was questionable on the goal. United will have to lift their game now.

Howards position I thought was questionable, but it wasn't because the shot was really unexpected and it was preparing for a cross, he moved as much as he could once the shot was happening, since you can just run cause then they'll shoot the other way.

not lookign great for united here atm

Downside for Utd is that Neville has gone for an x-ray and Ferdinand has a hamstring prob.

Rooney was excellent today and once again was the saviour. Imho he has certainly been worth his salt, he rescued this game today from the brink of disaster also I feel Phil Neville needs to be shown the door his performance today was laughable. He should of gone last summer not Butt. Sir Alex's dodgy tactics and team selection today almost cost us like midweek. Keane, Rio and Giggsy should of all played today, this crack of leaving Roy out is a joke, in fairness he is getting on and is approaching retirement but of late he has been such a rich vein form along with Giggs , as for Rio I was stunned to see he was dropped no doubt like himself. Now for the touchiest of subject's our keeping situation, point being their is no situation the dropping of Roy Carroll was a kick in the teeth, he has played so well this season and has built up a rappor with the defenders and to drop him at this stage of the season for a silly mistake europe is bang of order by Sir Alex. He has the ability to be our number 1 keeper and deserves to be given a contract to reflect that.

Thats complete bull, the man is ageing and he has had injuries but his fitness and performances have excellent. Ferguson is simply wrapping the man up in cotton wool.

Was it a goalkeeping mistake or a tactical error in midweek?

Utd should have wrapped that game up in 1st half today but Por played quite well and were heading for a deserved point until Rooney scored.

Fair deuce Portsmouth they did played well and took advantage of us. G0oalkeeping error for me but every goalkeeper has them. Roy Carroll has played very well this and Ferguson insulted him today by dropping him for keeper whom of which has played in the side since September.

Are you taking the p1ss or what? Ferguson insulted Carroll by dropping him? Don't make me laugh!! He had to drop him. He quite possibly ruined Utd.'s European hopes by a silly schoolboy error.

And you're every keeper does make errors but you have to admit Carroll has more than his fair share!

It happens to every keeper, and may have cost us europe but Ferguson is letting the fans & the media know he agrees with the criticism. Carroll performances have 90% of this season have been top quality you argue that. From my point of view I rather have the team concentrating on robbing the title from underneath that portuguese gits nose.

He is not good enough to be Uniteds number one Keeper. He makes too many mistakes when under pressure. He has been offered a contract but has refused to sign it. Rumour has it that he will be playing for Rangers iin Scotland next season. Good riddance I say, he would be ok as a backup keeper but his temprement lets him down when the heat is on. Howard was initally dropped for a similar mistake , it was only fair that Carroll suffered the same fate.

Giving howard another chance in the run in to the title with our strongest defence in front of him will give Fergie a better idea of what needs to be done for that position next season. Personally I think he will have to get a new number one.

Neville only has brusing on his ankle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Exactly, the premiership is still a goal, but none the less it is a big ask and isn't expected by Fergie.
He is thinkign for the future, and has to see if Howard can cut it. This is his last chance, and if he can't its time for him to move on, and to buya new keeper

Saw the goals on MOTD and Howard was definitely at fault for the Pompey goal.

That was a super finish i wouldn't blame howard for that maybe brown for his poor clearance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Howards positioning though was wrong...he should have been standing in the centre. He was too far to his right.

EDIT: Meant to say Howard instead of Brown.

Howard was a yard or two too much to the right of his goal. Had he been in the centre he would have definitely made it to the ball. His positioning was wrong and that cost united the goal.

    dam right

So browns clearance that went all of 5 yards had nothing to do with the goal

If he had of cleared the ball there would be no shot/howard blaming/goal,if a player plays the ball a couple of yards out of the box to opposing players trouble should be expected.

I sincerely hope that you are not a keeper eirebhoy. His positioning for the initial play was spot on (on the edge of the 6 yard box), the ball was on the ground so he was narrowing the angle for any shot coming in off the ground. Then it took a deflection and fell kindly for O'Neil and he hit a great looping shot (which is one of the hardest shots and even headers to save). Howard did all he could to get to it but was unlucky. To say he was to blame for that goal would be wrong.

The two centre halfs were at fault for making a balls of tracking Yakubu (was it?), and ended up both tracking him at the same time leaving a huge gap in the middle. If anyone is to blame its the centre halfs.

I was a keeper in my time and you are right to say his positioning was spot on in the first phase of play. However when the shot came in he was not in the centre of his goal, ie he did not keep up with the movement of the ball across his goal and so was at fault . He had plenty of time to get in the correct position and if he had he would have got something on the ball to prevent the goal. The defenders were at fault too though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Yes his positioning was fine 5 seconds previously. He had a lot of time to move into the centre after the ball was passed but stayed where he was. I wasn't a keeper but I'm sure Schmeichel knows more than us all and he blamed Howard. :)

Howards position was not great, very slow to get across the goal and seemed to get his angles wrong, saying that in a case like that I would blame the defenders for the girly way they tried to clear the ball and for not closing the down the shot.

    Still the keeper issues continue!
