    Bach's "Saint Matthew Passion"

"One of the landmarks of western culture, Bach's monumental St. Matthew Passion combines the forces of three choirs, a double orchestra and seven soloists to tell the story of the last days of Jesus Christ. Comprised of some of the most powerful music ever written, the St. Matthew Passion interpolates profound spiritual reaction throughout the dramatic story."

    SINGING TO MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

Three of Ireland’s leading choirs – the Dublin Bach Singers, the Boys of the Palestrina Choir and Carlow Choral Society will present J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion, part 1 at 4.30pm and part 2 at 8pm on Palm Sunday 20th April in St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral.

With John Elwes as Evangelist, Nigel Williams as Christus along with soloists Colette Boushell, Deirdre Cooling-Nolan, Jacek Wislocki, Martin Briody and John Magee, all accompanied by the Orchestra of St Cecilia and under the baton of Blánaid Murphy, this promises to be a wonderful musical occasion and a fitting start to Holy Week.

The performance is in aid of Trócaire’s annual Lenten Campaign which focuses on Ethiopia – 20 years after Live Aid.

Proceeds from the performance will benefit Trócaire's work in Ethiopia. Funds raised through the performance of the St Matthew Passion will be used to support a Community Water and Sanitation Project in the Oromiya Region of Ethiopia that will provide communities living in this desert region with a clean and secure water source.

The 2005 Lenten Campaign is also highlighting the importance of the Millennium Development Goals, a UN led initiative that is urging the international community and Heads Of State to work in partnership with poor countries like Ethiopia to radically reduce severe poverty and vulnerability.

The Millennium Development Goals set out eight specific, measurable goals to be reached by 2015 that include eradicating extreme hunger and poverty, access for all children to primary education, reducing child mortality and increasing maternal health. Ethiopia is a very good example of all the issues the Millennium Development Goals are trying to address.

Blánaid Murphy, Director of the Palestrina Choir in The Pro Cathedral stated: “We are delighted to have these musicians to perform this challenging work. It seems only apt to give the profits of this Easter concert to Trócaire’s Lenten Campaign which, each year, highlights the real issues facing the developing world and grabs the attention and hearts of the Irish public.”
