There should be, you know how people like to leave it til the last minute to send those entry forms in

    What can you do,
    Colm

Haha yeah, I'm one of em. I'll send off mine before I head off to quannum gym next week. Are you competing yourself?

No I'll be running it, and reffing on the day, so the -68Kg category is wide open.

You're off to Quannum? Will you do a write up of your experience there?

    Peace Out,
    Colm

Sure, why not.. I'm off on the 11th - 19th. Great place over there.

Tim, you should definitely fight at the lighter weight, remember, it's all about that power to weight ratio!

i'd be more of the line that the person with the better skill is going to win unless there is a trully massive difference in strength/power.

Hey I'm a big fan of skill! But when skill is equal attributes matter, particularly in competition. Also, you should be nice and light! :D

Yup.. Put Ricardo Arona against Royler Gracie and I'll go with Arona anyday.. Weight plays a major factor in grappling.

    Damn!
No can do this event. Was really looking forward to it but looks like the "arrival" is any day now! Maybe it's for the best, I've had to slack off the training so I'm more 85kgs then my usual slim jim 82.5kg. I'm feeling a bit tubby, but not tubby enough to compete with 92kilos!

I have a guy in the same situation as you in my club, I reccommended he go into the +12 months, a lot of your judo experience does translate across, still Colm is the right guy to ask!

Ok I think my form will be in today, Kev is dropping it in to colm at training in Firhouse. I've gone with -12months.

Now comes the girly questions... what should I wear?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

I thought this was Colum's area of expertise.........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

Will Kev has copied my taste in rashguards... ;)

Dont know if t-shirts are allowed (feet get caught in them)!

Dunno if a gi is allowed...

If you wear a t-shirt, you can be choked with it. Gi's are fine. I'd recommend shorts and bare chest for pure nogi action!

    Kevin_rc_ie, got your application.

    Peace and Love Y'All,
    Colm

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

hmm ok. fighting bare chest to bare chest is a bit minging. lol. yeah i don't think i'll get a rashgaurd. i might get one of those canterbury rugby under garment things....

do you have to shave , is stubble allowed ?

Unlike FILA, I won't be disqualifying entrants on the basis of having cool designer stubble (like me  )

    Get those entries in!

What time is it kicking off at??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

You know, I completely forgot to put that up on any public message board.

Weigh In starts at 10am sharp.

    Rules Meeting at 11am.

Competition begins straight after. Please let everyone know the times

So how will it work? If there are 1o people in the group they'll be divided into 2 pools of 5. Everyone in the pool fights each other and the 2 highest dudes in each table go into semi finals?
Or will it be straight knock out until there is a final?
or will it be just a league?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭mark.leonard

If there are 8 or more in a group it will be divided into two sub-divisions. Everone in each sub-division will fight everyone else. The top two from each sub division will come out to semi-final knockout stage.
If there are less than 8 it will be a Round Robin to find a winner.

what about draws in round robin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

    Win 3 points,

    Draw 1 point

    Loss 0 points.

Winner is the guy with the most points at the end of the League. If needs be there'll be a playoff for 1st/2nd/3rd.

See you all bright and early tomorrow!

Yeah that Dude in the blue in the picture was really good. One almost all his matches by arm bar. He had a nice flow.

My own performance was a bit ......

I got there at 9am. Knew I had a kilo and a half to drop. So 4 weigh ins, 20 laps of the gym and countless other excerises I weighed in on the button. So thanks to Colum for that.

I think my group was a mix of U6months and 6-12. I was actually a good group for me.

Firstly, allow me to talk up my performace. In a group of 6, I was the only person who fought 5 times. They guy who came 3rd, only fought 3 matches I think. They guy i beat first got injured so everyone was awarded an automatic win :-(. Then the next guy i fought, we drew after 4 mins of energy consuming wrestling. But he also went on to withdraw, so 2 guys got walk overs!. However, the 3 guys that topped the group did all beat me by guillotine/triangle submission so i can't really explain. But, but, the last guy that beat me, had an advantage cos I had 4 fights under my belt and he had only 2.

    A remark about stradegy.

I read up in a BJJ book about some of the common techniques. So I was conceptually familar with what was going to happen. HOwever, when the going gets tough, people like me, revert to what they know best. So, I had to admit, I just went out and did judo throws and hold ons. Which, aren't really incredibly helpful to force a submission. Also, I was guilty of defending the groundwork with a judo perspective, which really ended up with me puttin my head too close to the other guy's head who's beneath me and allowing him a easy guillotine. I think I should have warn my gi, I would have but I left it in college on friday because I forgot my key :-(.

So, in the end, my judo worked quite well up to a point. I was able to take 4/5 people to the mat on my terms, put them in my preferred hold down. But after about a min of holding (in judo it's a max of 25s) i had to let go and evetually ended up been caught. I knew I'd never get submissions but I thought my defense would be stronger.

Moral of the story: need to go BJJ training.

Colum reffed most of my matches so he may be able to confirm or deny what i said.

Good competition, ran smoothly, lots of fun.

    :D:D:D

    Well done to all.

Event went well. Some lessons to be learnt. I think we need to have a schedule of what weight categories and what times.

Rules worked. Sportsmanship levels were very high. Didnt see one piece of bad sportsmanship in any of the matches I reffed. No one denied any taps. Not much for me to do actually! ;)

Kevin_rc_ie displayed some lovely judo takedowns. He even won one fight by "tap out" due to judu throw.

My advice Kev... Train without the gi under sub wrestling rules in your judo club some day. Compete at the Irish BJJ Championships (which is a gi event) in October.

I'm ****ing pissed I couldn't go. Had to pull out with my ankle.. I've re-injured it. I couldn't go to quannum with the lads either. God is making fun of me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭mark.leonard

Moral of the story for me was don't take a hospital shot when you are going for an ankle pick!
and to a lesser extent, I need to be under weight next time around, being one of th elightest guys in the division was not an enjoyable experience!

Brilliant job by Colm and all the rest of the guys who got everything together, looking forward to the next King of the Mat in September.

    th elightest guys

    the eliteist guys? only messing.

is king of the mat mma? as in bjj with striking?

No, AFAIK it's pretty much exactly the same as the NSC rules. :EDIT: Colum got there ahead of me.

    Event went very smoothly indeed.

Moral of the story for me is don't drop my ****ing head and shoulders in the clinch or I will (did  ) get guillotined.

I didn't wear a T-Shirt after watching the -62kg divison where Andy was getting stuck in with the T-Shirt chokes. I don't think Eimhin will ever wear one again after the state of his neck!

Well done to Colm and the gang, good competition!
As with all of these types of competitions I've gone to (mma league, KOTM), there was a great atmosphere, no bs, no egos and it was a lot of fun.

Would have been back in Limerick nice n early and all had we not encountered a slight lack of petrol in the tank a few miles past portloaise!!

Choking someone with the T-shirt is known as a rat choke, probably because you're a rat b@st@rd for doing it.

    Still, it's no Riley choke...
