I am looking for opinions and facts on weather it is better to use a usb 2.0 web camera or a f irewire camera as I am working on a vision project and I would like some information on which camera to choose.

    Thanks

would a web cam not be streaimng the data at an incredibly slow rate?

i run a webcam on usb 1.1 [640x480 vga, - sony eyetoy] - home monitoring from work
are you trying to run a much higher data rate camera?

No i am using a firewire camera at the mo, its running at 400MB/S which is real time. Usb 1.1 runs at 12.5MB/S i think!

heres a good site for getting an idea of speeds

    http://www.acme.com/build_a_pc/bandwidth.html
here ya go the one furthest from the bottem is best

so i guess usb2 beats IEEE 1394 (firewire)
but IEEE 1394b is way ahead

but best bet is to plug you 640x480 webcam into the 4-way interleaved PC1600 (DDR200) SDRAM slot

    Firewire isnt 400 mB/s. It's 400 mb/s. Bit of a difference.....
USB 2.0 should be pretty much the exact same as firewire for your application. A camera wont come close to saturating either.

A DV camera uses 25 mb/s which is 3.25 mB/s. Usb 1.1 ain't good enough, but anything else is.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Firewire is 400mbps, USB 2 is 480mbps

USB is a little bit faster so, but there is not much in it. Firewire cables are generally more expensive as are firewire cards
