Friend of mine has a PC on dialup that just will not connect to the net. Did all the usual on it - anti virus, uninstall unused programs, spyware, firewall etc etc. The odd time it will connect at rediculous speeds of 16kbps ..

Any ideas on wat else we could try? Maybe its the phone line...

What number are you dialing? eircom net is 1892150150
    What OS are you using?

No error message as such .. just unable to establish connection. Using IOL Free dialup no and its Win XP.

If you try the following you should be able to get a 3 digit error number.
    Close IE
Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections
You should be able to see the Dial Up Networking Icon for you IOL
    Right Click and Connect.

As long as a browser is NOT open, the Connection will pass or fail
If it fails it always give a 3 digit error number e.g. 691, 680 etc.

    Lemme know how it goes?

Is he trying to connect for the first time, or has he connected successfully in the past? If the latter, has any work been done on his PC and/or his phone line recently?

Also, you should bear in mind that 16kbps, pathetic though it is, may be the maximum his line is capable of - it would not be the first time this kind of performance has been reported. Is there any noise on the line during regular phone calls? If so, get Eircom to check the line.

If it connects intermittently and only ever connects at crappy speeds it might well be a physical issue around the condition of the line or the contacts on the extension cord or the modem itself. If you plug the extension into a phone and pick up the handset, is the sound clear or crackly? Or, when the modem is dialling, can you hear the dialtone when it goes off-hook to dial the number? What does it sound like?

anyway ive done all the usual updating adware etc again and connected it to another phone without problems.. getting up to 46kbps...

so we will see tomorrow wat happens when i bring it back.. :) prob turn out to be the phone line after all....
