    The NSC site lists
pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists, children and the elderly
as point number 4 on the 'Main Causes of death and injury on our roads'.

Surely its time we took action against these people immediately? Mandatory jail time perhaps?

Interestingly the same site has statistics on where penalty points are handed out, the vast, vast preponderence of which are in Dublin, for speeding. e.g. 42,000 speeding points issued in Dublin but only 1400 in Carlow / 1500 in Monaghan. Clearly the drivers in these counties drive with more diligent care to the speed limits. Or maybe the lazy fuzz can't be bothered / don't wish to target their country brethren

Funnily enough, the NSC doesn't have any statistics on which counties have the highest death tolls, but you can be damn sure it's not Dublin.

All in all the site just goes to prove conclusively what I have always suspected, the NSC is a sham and the Government's Road Safety policy is purely interested in appearing to being doing something worthwhile, while continuing to milk Dubliners for more money. €3,360,000 in 'speeding' tickets issued on perfectly safe dual carriageways so far. Where has that money gone?

It is more that they don't know HTML rather than don't know their a*se from their elbow. It should read:-
    • Driving at excessive or inappropriate speeds
    • Driving and walking while impaired – alcohol and drugs
    • Failure to wear seatbelts
    • Driving recklessly and carelessly around vulnerable road users – pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists, children and the elderly
    • Driving when tired or fatigued

I agree with the penalty point discrepancy though. Theres a Garda that hides in the trees on the merrion road opposite the UK embassy...why is he hiding?

It wouldn't have anything to do with the population of Co. Dublin being approx. 1.1 million, and that of Carlow only being 47 thousand would it?

I wonder which has the higher level of road deaths per capita?

Oh look, Carlow has the highest number of accidents per 1000 population in the entire country at 3.0 per 1,000. And oh look again, 68% of all fatal accidents occur on rural roads. Surprise surprise. Funny that 68% or even anywhere close of penalty points aren't handed out in rural areas.

37% of all fatal accidents are caused by going over to the wrong side of the road. This is pretty much restricted to country driving/drivers.

    Read all about it http://www.nra.ie/PublicationsResources/DownloadableDocumentation/d341.PDF

I was merely pointing out that you shouldn't really be surprised that in an area with a population of 1.1 million plus all the people outside of the area who commute to it every day that there will be more speeding tickets issued than in a place like Carlow, wherever the hell that is, with a population of 47 thousand. At least, it doesn't surprise me.

Now, of course the Gardai should target rural roads in areas with higher accident rates, I'm not disputing that, but that isn't the reality is it? So why be surprised at the figures?

I think it should also be mentioned that most fatalities happen at nighttime around the weekends. How many speedtraps, checkpoints, etc. are to be seen in Ireland at these times?

by their own figure 40% of drivers never mind other passangers dont wear seatbelts.... they dont need calibrated guns to sort that one out.... but how many times do ya see a spot check for seatbelts.....

Random breath testing for alcohol was dropped from the road traffic bill in november because of lobbying from the vinteners...

government road SAFETY = BULL, its only about face saving and cash collection

green-blood is right. Nobody in goverment gives a toss about road safety. If they did they'd get professionals in to run the safety campaigns. It's all about money and how much of ours they can make theirs.
