An Post has today announced that it is offering broadband to every household in the country, including those not linked to DSL exchanges, for a cost of less than 5c per GB transferred. This amazing new product will offer 1:1 contention and will be uncapped meaning users can transfer as much data as the like for a flat fee.

An Post representatves explained how the new product works: "If a user posts another user in the Republic of Ireland a dual layer DVD+R with 8.5GB of data, he or she can expect the package to arrive within 48 hours. This is equivalent to a 512Kbs broadband connection for the low cost of 48c, the price of a stamp. The users don't even have to be connected to a DSL enabled exchange. As long as they're able to receive mail they can use this innovative new product."

An Post also announced a 1Mbs service for business users. "By using SwiftPost, users can expect the same package to arrive within 24 hours, which is equivalent to a 1Mbs broadband connection."

An Post admitted that the service will be somewhat slower on weekends: "Unlike other services, the anticipated drop in data transfer rates will not be due to more people using the service on the weekend. It's simply because our postmen, or data delivery engineers as we've re-titled them, don't work on Sundays."

The product is so revolutionary that the Cabinet is expected to convene next week to discuss floating An Post on the Nasdaq. Some economists have estimated that an IPO may generate as much as €100 billion for the Irish exchequer.

Don't be silly, what sort of broadband connection would work reliably in that connectionless, packet dropping, slow system?

See, my jokes are just as funny as yours...
