Don't know if I can really comment, alot of bands really grabbed my nuts this year and didn't let go. But if I had to shout some names I'd shout Arsis, Necrophagist (I know, but at least they're original), Symbyosis, Dragonforce(say cheese! New album in stores soon, it's quite good), perhaps Polish act Hate or Cryptopsy even (god they've become popular). Next year? Psycroptic are set for a new album, as are Necrophagist and Martyr. New Cannibal Corpse too, but it's gauranteed to disappoint. Slayer will ahve a new album out so I'd expect to see alot from them, though reportedly it's like God Hates Us All's follow-up, so I won't be buying if that's the case.

As for all the weird Mastodon love here, I didn't really like Leviathan as I did Remission. It was so weak at the knees in terms of production, the guitars hadn't enough low end. That and Remission was just more creative. So my praise for the band is reserved until I see a third album.

And guys, seriously, Trivium are absolutely terrible. WTF :(

I have to admit Trivium have some good riffs, but other than that it all sounds pretty much the same to me. I'm sick of the shouting then into the Emo-e singing, seems to be popular with some bands these days.

Was talking to a friend the other day and he was saying "If you watched one of Trivium's videos, you've seem them live".

Nothing about Strapping Young Lad (other Devin Townsend band) ? Their last record is powerful ! I love it and Gene Hoglan, the drummer, too.

Well you've hit the nail on the head completely . I totally agree with everything said there especially about Mastodon, although I have no love for Dragonforce.

As for my picks, I thought it was a great year for Opeth, Nevermore, Dark Tranquility, Cephalic Carnage and Behemoth. Overall I don't think 2005 was a great metal year. Can't wait for Tool and Slayer releases this year, maybe even some new Dying Fetus. In terms of non-metal, I liked releases from Dredg, Porcupine Tree, New Pornographers, Sufjan Stevens (who got Pitchforkmedia's top vote), Fiery Furnaces and the live thing that John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk did together - even if you only mildly like jazz, I highly recommend it.

The Strokes are going to have a big come back this year as theirnew album is nearly as good as the first one and heaps better than the second.

But the biggest band of this year is going to be the Arctic Monkeys, I have their album and its excellent, every track has great guitar and the lyrics are down to everyday things. Excellent stuff.

I saw U2 live three times this year, Croker, Cardiff and New York Madison Square Garden. I know I'll get booed off the stage for even bringing U2 to the table but the Cardiff gig was something else.

Also, Bloc Party were very good in the Olympia.

Hard-Fi was definitely my favourite for 2005, and hopefully, 2006 will be a great year for them. Their album, Stars of CCTV, got to No. 1 in the British Album charts and didn't do too badly in Ireland either.
