Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone know how to copy footage from a video to a pc?

    Yep.
There are two main ways you could do about doing this, depending on what hardware you've got (or are willing to buy)

[1]. Get a video capture card for your PC... connect your VCR's SCART outputs to the capture cards 'composite in' and to your soundcards 'line in'.... use capture software on the PC to complete the process... capture software usualy comes with video capture cards, but if not, you can use something like Windows Movie Maker that comes installed with WindowsXP... there are also some free programs like VirtualDub that'll work.

[2]. If you've got a digital video camera (with both dv-in and dv-out), you can hook this up to the VCR's SCART and capture onto DV through the cameras analog-inputs ... then use your PC's firewire ports (assuming you have any of these) to capture the DV to your harddrive... again using capture software.
If you have this hardware, then doing it this way will save you the cost of a video capture card.

And of course there's secret option number [3]. and this is to get someone else to do it for you ;)

I hope this has made sense, if not just ask and we can go into more detail.

I know someone who I think has a dv camcorder and a dvd recorder. Would it be better do do with the camcorder or just use the vcr as input for the dvd recorder and then rip the dvd?

Well a lot of DV cams only have the ability to output and can't capture from external sources, so it may or may not be an option depending on the specs of the camera... also you'll want to have firewire ports in order to get the footage from the camera to the PC... going the DV route can be tricky aswell because of the sheer size of the output... even a few minutes of full quality PAL DV would be in the gigabytes... you'd probably want to re-compress it from whatever PC you're capturing it from... then maybe burn the files to DVD as and AVI for later editing.
This is a great setup if you've got it on your own PC and you're transfering the DV footage onto hundreds of gigs worth of harddrive space... but when you're getting someone else to do it, you have to think about how they're going to get it from their PC to yours :p

The dvd recorder sounds like an excellent solution, although I haven't had the pleasure of trying one out... it sounds comparitively painless though doesn't it :)
