At Last it is now possible to get free phones on contract in Ireland. This is standard practice in the UK.

Meteor have reduced almost all their bill paid phone prices to free:

While I noticed Vodafone have some of their 3G phones on sale for free in some of their stores at the moment ( on the higher tarrifs) and CPW have some phones for free on O2.

Hopefully it is only a matter of time now before all bill paid phones are free on contract like the UK.

I'm pretty sure that phones on contracts often were free, a couple of years ago. I definitely remember getting a free contract phone off Digifone i'd say about six years ago.

Still fairly bad in comparision to the UK. They give some pretty nice phones out for free :)

Yes but the UK has a much bigger market and much more comptetition. It's a duopoly here. Let's say Vodafone are charging 100e for a phone. Why would o2 bother selling it free when it could just sell it at 80 and get the sales anyway?
Also sometimes when CPW tries to advertise and sell bill phones for free, they are told by the networks they're not allowed do this.
