I've been using AVG free for years and never had any problems. I give it the
    thumbs up and my vote!!!

I started using avast shortly after AVG went to v8.0. Had used AVG for years, but found this new version slower to scan and a resource hog.

Has been going around for a while now, its not a virus, it's a hoax.
Have you ever heard of snopes.com

A lot of these "Virus Alerts" in your inboxes are hoaxes and as such should not be forwarded. I would push for a ban on this sort of thing as it is a nuisance in email inboxes

I switched from McAfee VirusScan to AVG Free, because of recmooendations from friends. I find it great, and it's free!!

I have used Norton and found it to be useless, I use Avira now and have no problems.

Just to update this, I've been running the latest version of AVG and it's killing my machine, from reading the user comments on the review in PC Mag turns out I'm not the only one to turn my back on it. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2291383,00.asp
I'm going to switch over to Avast 4.8 home edition, by all accounts it's supposed to be very good http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2282704,00.asp

    AVG free for me,
As this is the third different Anti-virus protector ive tried and im very happy with it.
Had Norton 1st - jeez it was terrible slow down everything on the computer.
Then had McAfee - it seemed to let a trojan in without detecting it .
So i voted for AVG as i've had no problems with it so far so good :)

With Microsoft set to unveil its new 100% free anti-virus for Windows (Morro) it makes you wonder how long McAfee and Symantec/Norton will last...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 spudsy

I will have to try morro to see if it is any better then the rest:D

Im using Comodo Internet Security with comodo av installed. The av is ok, does not have features that other av have such as self defense capacity. That said i love the firewall. Intrusive as it is, it does keep my computer relatively stealth. What do other people think of Comodo Firewall? also to people using Kaspersky 2010, is is good? I uses to have a older version and am thinking of moving back?

NOD32 Antivirus is the best option. We are having it installed on the company network and it's behaving perfectly. Remote management is very cool option. Simple push installation and reporting. And i have it also at home. Actually at home I got ESET Smart Security. Which has extra Spam Filter and Personal Firewall. No problems at all. And the latest version 4 has some cool extra features. www.eset.ie :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 695 ✭✭✭FusionNet

Janchi is on the Money ESET is one of the best by far.. Sweet software, no bloatware, CPU light, advanced and basic modes, firewall version as well as basic and cheap as chips with options to buy multiple years.. Oh obviously it has a corporate server version too for really really good value compared to symantec..

On Avira AntiVir for about 3 years now with no viral problems, but then again my usage of Windows these days is very rare.

Check this tables for compare: http://eset.ie/products/compare_heuristic_detection.php
I know that they are posted on ESET website, but obviously they have to be true if they are publicly released. :D

You have a virus you need to remove: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Nothing compares to it, as long as you keep it updating.
For protection, I advise AVG. It detects a fair few false positives, but hey, you'll be safe.

I sware by Eset NOD32 Antivirus, it's the best anti-virus by far.

Avast, officially the best free AV.
Updates Virus Database numerous times a day.

I use AVG free version 9.0 with no issues

I've moved from AVG to avast. The newer, bloater versions of AVG just annoyed me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,569 ✭✭✭ethernet

AVG has been tiring me of late: the regular need to update the program, having people think the free version is no longer available as the "download" is in tiny text at the end of the page, the failed updates, etc.

Have uninstalled AVG from two PCs this weekend and throw on Microsoft's new Security Essentials. It got good reviews in relation to its detection rates, it doesn't annoy the user and there are regular updates. It reminds me of Windows Defender.

I used to use AVG, before it got all bloated and slow. Now I use Comodo which has a firewall and antivirus in one. It used to be great, but recently it's been getting a bit glitchy. Still, it's the best free firewall out there, and it's a lot easier having the anti-virus with it.

    Vote to Kaspersky Internet Secuity.
I do a full scan on my pc with avg which was updated, and the results did not find any results. Then try using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is already updated, the results I found trojan named Kido. So I conclude KIS 2010 is the best. :D

Microsoft Security Essentials, simple and fast, I used to use Avira, found too many false possitives and pop up ad really annoyed me, Avast was ok, again found a few false possitives, Havnt used AVG in years, and its been getting more and more bloated each revision, The new Norton is supposidly much improved, but still not up there with a number of free ones and why pay for a anti virus anyways? For guides on which is "Best" check out AV Comparatives, the ones up top do seem to have a good few false possitives from expierience, so i settled for MSE,

    Nick

It really irratates me the way they sell so much of Norton 360 in Pc-World, it's probably one of the worst anti-virus solutions available.

I use ESET Smart Security, it's the way to go. I don't think I've recieved one false positive and the advanced heuristics are great.

DO NOT BUY NORTON OR MCAFEE IN PC-WORLD OR ANYWHERE, IT'S RUBBISH.

I'm thinking of getting nod32 but just wondering if someone could explain the difference between spywear, anti-virus and firewall? Does the one thing (like nod32) include all these or do I have to get/download three different products?
    (sorry for being dense) :o

The Smart Security from ESET protects you from all of the above, it includes a firewall, and anti-virus/spyware defenses.

The ESET Antivirus only includes anti-virus/anti-spyware, and not a firewall.

Best free ones: Avast, Avira AntiVir, Microsoft Security Essentials (all of these are as good or even better than a lot of "paid for" antivirus programs)

    Paid for: Kaspersky, NOD32.

I will not be persuasive and will not say to use any or other antivirus program but I think this is pretty good explained every feature of particular programs here.

    Morning,

I might be off the trend but hopefully someone can help, I installed win 7 recently and I'm running it with Microsoft Security Essentials.. which seems fine so far. I used to use adware / spy bot / avg etc.. All good programs. I use Firefox and a pop up keeps coming up (party poker one).
I've tried all the obvious steps but it just won't go away! At this point, I'm thinking of just going back to avg and spy spot. Any suggestion anyone can give me would be great! - Thanks.

You could always install the firefox Popup blocker Plus extension, It will only allow popups if you specifically say so, via a nice friendly bar at the top of the browser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭swat1902

Anyone know how to stop the following pop up - disguised as computer folder/virus scan.

    trojanhorse.jpg

I get it about maybe once a month. It tries to download rogue antivirus software but I just cancel it. I have pop up blocker and real time protection from microsoft security essentials switched on. I've also tried running a scan before closing the page down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 janchi

Download and install malwarebytes that you can freely download at Malwarebytes.org in safe mode with networking. after the software update itself run complete scan and that should get rid of it for you.

Next time use some good antivirus product that can prevent your system of being infected like this. (try K7 Total security for example. It has good rootkit and adware prevention)

Isn't Microsoft Antivirus good? I have Malwarebytes' anti-malware too and tried running a scan on it when the pop up was open. Neither detected it and both are upto date.

Don't think I'm infected, no need for safe mode...it's just a pop up that tries to hijack the pc, but then it disappears after you cancel it.

Well for a start you should ditch Internet Explorer and download a real browser. :pac:
Chrome is a good secure option.

Also run ccleaner to clean out all your old cookies. There could be something lurking on your system triggering it.

    Here we go.

Funny enough I use ccleaner too, run it every few weeks. Great job!! Wasn't big on chrome. Might go back to firefox. Is there much difference, like reeallly?
