most ISP's do not carry binary newsgroups
you need to get an offer from a NSP such as easynews (very recommended btw)

Thanks for the recommendation but im still none the wiser as to why they dont carry these newsgroupes .

I think they block them, I use clara.

They don't carry binary newsgroups because a full binaries feed requires massive amounts of disk space (>1TB/day) and even more bandwidth. That all costs a lot of money for something relatively few people would actually use.

    Moving this to Nets/Comms aswell.

Because there is nothing but dirty pictures, movies, software, music and stuff that shouldn't be mentioned in polite company. Filth, and more filth I tell you :o

Keep away or your brain will turn into a sausage!

I found this out by signing up with Giganews. Fortunately I stopped just before I became totally Dennyfied

Newsgroups were great in ye olden times. It was where you would go for information and came about after the old BBSs (verily olden times) and before the fancy web based boards sprung up.

Around the same time as the net got popular circa late 1990s, newsgroups started to get flooded with just endless useless fecking spam and porn. Spam is killing and has almost totally killed usenet so basically as everything in through HTTP now, most regular ISPs don't carry them except much stripped down versions. Too much data and newsgroups isn't the place anyway for heavy binaries.

Bittorrent and IRC would prob suit your needs better these days.

It's funny, but sometimes the old ways are often the best.

My ironic comments in the last post might have disguied the fact that newsgroups are still the best way of of getting what you want.

A bit top heavy, and they require a few bob, but still a great resource.

Isn't it ironic that boards.ie content is practically all text based (ideal for usenet) but requires extreme bloat to deliver as a web board:

Readable text content of this page 6 KB
HTML content of this page 188 KB
HTML content of this page with graphics 368 KB

My usenet provider recommendation is Teranews - for a once off charge of $3.95, http://www.teranews.com/ offer access to a full feed with binary groups and 50MB/day download.

Yeah your right maybe eventually things will split up again. It would be nice to have a separate app for bulletin boards int he traditional sense. Accessing boards.ie through Telnet, now your talking!!
