I'd say like Meteor at the start, 3 are offering them much more profit on sales... trying to kick start their 3pay network.

I could be way off of course.

I'm thinking of moving to 3 from O2 but I was wondering if 3 expired and if so after how long? I know the 10 euro you get with the phone only last 60 days but what about the rest?

    Anyone?

Why would you want to move from O2 to Three?

Recently signed up with 3 and got the Nokia N80. Great handset, features etc. Just hit a problem I was unaware of though. I tried to install a couple of apps. Wayfinder navigator trial and Wayfinder earth Beta. They send an sms with download link. Went to download and get External Page, site not available.

Spoke to 3 customer services and was told that NO internet access is possible from the 3 network. Only access to planet 3 portal is available.

This means that you cannot get external email from pop3 addresses, gmail or download apps etc.

Now I may be missing something but why bother having such fantastic handsets if they cannot be used properly. Cannot use the phone as a modem so it is really not much use as a total connectivity tool.

Am I correct in this interpretation or does anyone actually have external email
working. Even Gmail or msn would be better than nothing. Surely they do not expect you to only use a 3 email address?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome.

well i was with vodafone then , decided to move to three ,, then moved back to vodafone before my contract with three expired!!!

when something seems too good to be true,, it usually is...
and 24hr old news clips from the day before,......well...

three were too restrictive, walled garden and all........so i went back to vodafone, its great..

300 free web texts, huge selection of roaming , good coverage....etc

i am still waiting for three to unlock my 3 phone... they seem to have a problem unlocking nokias! so much so that they gave me a sony one in its place..... and guess what,,, thats locked too... DOH!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 299 ✭✭EIN

i phoned three about a month ago requesting an unlock code for my 6680. i've been asking for it for just under a year and when i asked for a manager they told me about this new policy: they can't unlock the 6680,6280,n70 or n80 so they send you out a different phone that they can unlock and take away your old one. they charge €25 for the unlock code. i don't know if asking for a manager is what brought about this new policy.

so i got a motorola v3x delievered to my house and they said to phone up then and they'd send off for the unlock code which could take up to a week to get. i wondered why they couldn't just send off the request for the unlock code at the same time as requesting the phone be sent out, avoiding me having to call and getting it unlocked sooner but i let it go.

then i found out why they made me phone up again. i phoned up and the guy gave me the same story about it possibly taking a week but he said he'd probably phone the next day.

    a week passes

i phone again. a woman gives me the same story and sends the request again.

    a week passes

i phoned today, the guy put me on hold for a minute while he walked across the room and generated the code. he told me it had just been generated by a piece of software.

    three pisses me off

same story with me and its been 3 days.,, each time i call i say its been passed to the technical team ! this sort of rubbish with three is why i moved back to vodafone!!

vodafone is more expensive but you get the service,,, i was only back on vodafone 2 wks and they gave me the unlock code to my new voda contract fone!!

im still waiting for my unlocking code from three!!!!!!! over a year later!!!!

also i paid for a 6680 on contract with three and they gave me refurb! sony k608i in replacement! cause they cant unlock the 6680!! ahhhhh

I've been thinking of getting one of these too. Have you tried conneting using the wi-fi? Are you still stuck in the walled garden?
And how is it charged if you go out through your own router?

you can get to any website using the wifi and there's no charge. you're conecting to your own broadband, not 3's network

Browsing with WiFi works really well, especially due to the 352x418 resolution of the screen and the new browser.

Was wondering if they placed restrictions on the n80 regarding wifi connections to the internet. Really tempted by 3, but the walled gardens are unacceptable. There is no point to a smartphone if you cant download software.
Between reading this thread and the difficulty in obtaining operator setting for a flashed k800i, i think i'll pass.

If you check adverts.ie I have a two month old N80, unlocked and unbranded phone for sale, as new with leather case and CD full of apps and games, and it is cheaper than what Three will charge you for their locked N80 on 3Pay :-)

one point worth checking into. is to have a close look at three's T&C theres prob something in there....that they can fall back on so they dont have to give the unlock code!

each time i call they say that they were waiting for nokia to release the unlock code...now that i have the replacement sony i still dont know when i will get the code....
it might be useful if someone had the email address of some managers and or team leaders in three and we cud mail them direct.. and cc comreg...

During the term of this Agreement, you must not permit your Handset to be unlocked via any unauthorised manner (ie. by anyone other than us or the Handset manufacturer) because this involves securing access to the software which is not authorised by the Handset manufacturer. You must contact us if you want your Handset to be unlocked from our network. If you contact us to request that your Handset be unlocked from our network, we will arrange for your Handset to be unlocked in an authorised manner (which may include replacing your Handset with an unlocked handset), and any Charge for this will be given in the Price Guide for 3 Services. We will do this provided you own the Handset and you ensure that there are no outstanding amounts owing on your 3 account. If the Handset price paid by you is less than the full retail value of the Handset and you only had your Handset for less than 12 months, we will not unlock the Handset until you have paid the difference between your purchase price and the full retail value. Prior to us arranging for your Handset to be unlocked, you must ensure that you back-up or otherwise store separately any of your information or other data on the Handset which you may require, as this may be lost during the Handset unlocking process. We are not responsible for any information or any other data which maybe lost during the Handset unlocking process. 3 Services

yes, i realise how difficult it is to communicate with companies which are based in finland. if only there was some way for them to send the software in under a year. if only there was some way 3 ireland could give them a form of electronic "address" which nokia could type into a program and send the software along some sort of interconnecting line possibly called "teh int3rw3b" to be received at the headquarters of 3 ireland. in the absence of such a web and a form of address, i'm not surprised it has taken a year to send the software

Having joined 3 at the start of the month, I've been quite pleased with the service so far. I've had no trouble with their India-based customer support either. *touch wood*. It's actually quite amazing how well covered the country is with their 3G coverage (Vodafone is really poor in comparison). However, all my service has been with Ireland and I might be travelling abroad around Christmas time. So I have two questions:

    1) Do you think they will ever update their roaming list? They have Lao and Azerbaijan but not Canada! Three UK have a much larger list (including Japan and Canada where I plan on using my phone).

    2) Has any pre-pay customer used their phone in the UK or Northern Ireland? If so, what are the costs? Their website is very unclear on these.

    Thanks

On 3uk it's 35c per min. I didn't have access to T Mobile though like it said the site.

Just to note, you can use MSN Messenger on 3 Ireland. I discovered by accident last night. If you go to their Mobile Sites, and select MSN Hotmail, you are directed to Live.com or somthing, and you can just click the link for Live Messenger, sign in as normal, and work away. Its basiclly a mobile WebMessenger, but it works albeit not as good as a dedicated MSN app on your phone.

@mayhem: To add some perspective to your problems. I have been a 3 customer litterly 2 months after they went live and I have never experienced any problems save for a few.

    1. I dont recall anyone having problems calling my number, at least not after the activiation period (when your account first goes live).

    2. I did have this happen to me quite often, but always when I was on the Vodafone roaming, and Vodafone roaming still doesnt work in some places I have used it.

    3. Sending SMS outside Ireland, to networks which 3 have no agreements with is purely at your own risk, 3s mistake was not telling anyone this which IMO was a serious mistake on their part. If the other person does receive it it would be because the gateways on their (foreign) network is open for testing and possible future roaming agreements. This is how I can now text O2 UK customers.

    4. Never affected me, but then, I dont use my phone a whole lot.

    5. Now, this I agree on, they need to kill this crappy walled garden, just let people access the open internet, any Nokia Symbian based phone will be able to access the real internet just fine, with Opera. The N73 runs a new browser based on Apple WebKit (JavaScriptCore and WebCore). Really, 3 should just let people browse at their own risk, block porn if they want to protect subscribers.

    6. 3G access works just fine outside Ireland, I was in Hong Kong and I was able to browse Planet3 and I was able to download news and video clips just fine, and for free too.

This has been said before, but anyone who remembers when meteor just launched, how bad its coverage was and how crap its roaming was. Rome was not built in a day, new networks (3 is now 1Yr old) take time to work out the kinks.

    Just my 2¢

ive had a problem like the one you mentioned in your 2nd point
sometimes when people ring my 3 number it they hear it ring for a few rings then it stops ringing (well my phone would still be ringing) and if i asnswer it i can talk to them normally but a lot of the time when people stop hearing it ring they hang up ya know, though i dont think its happened in a while and im usually fast at answering my phone

i had the same problems, and also, if your on the fringe of 3's 3g signal your phone will hold on to that signal as their phones are prgrammed to prefer 3g signal...even if a vodafone full 2.0g/2.5g is present (3roaming partner.).. this results in missed calls calls breaking up etc.,.. i posted on this previously..

i left three before my contract was up! and guess wot... 3 waived the cancellation fees....and i went back to vodafone... IMO vodafone is vastly better service and when you ring the voda help desk problems get sorted quickly...also i had no problems getting my unlock code for handset from vodafone while still in contract...with no charges to unlock the fone!!!!!

i am still waiting for my 3 fone to be unlocked! they sent me a sony and took back the 6680. as they couldnt unlock the 6680 and charged me €25 ,, and the sony that was sent out was locked too..

a week after receiving the sony fone it is still locked,
and about 20 or so calls to their helpdesk still not unlocked.. was told the sony would arrive unlocked! also the keypad of the sony they sent was dirty!

still waiting for my unlock code for the fone..

    just my 0.01 worth
