I was in the states last week and thankfully unlike the last time I was there my phone roamed nicely, sending and receiving texts and making calls.

They seemed to have sorted their USA roaming out.

Hong Kong ???? Thats because its their head office. Austria,Australia, UK,Denmark are the only places this works.

On VF you can use 3G / VF Live in
    Vodafone Australia
    Vodafone Germany
    Vodafone Greece
    Vodafone Hungary
    Vodafone Italy
    Vodafone Malta
    Vodafone Netherlands
    Vodafone Portugal
    Vodafone Spain
    Vodafone Sweden
    Vodafone UK
    SFR (France)
    Swisscom (Switzerland)
    1. Yes, their head offices are in HK, but as you pointed out, they have 3G roaming in every country they have a 3G network in. But I was also able to get 3G roaming in Amsterdam too on T-Mobile. And I can get 3G roaming on the 3 networks in Italy and Sweden too.

    2. Of course you will get Vodafone roaming on those networks, they are a) owned by vodafone or b) are an affiliate/partner network that is partly owned by vodafone.

@mayhem: To add some perspective to your problems. I have been a 3 customer litterly 2 months after they went live and I have never experienced any problems save for a few.

    1. I dont recall anyone having problems calling my number, at least not after the activiation period (when your account first goes live).

For me it lasted over 4 months. Particularly calls from the US and Belgium for some reason. Very feckin' irrittating to say the least...
    2. I did have this happen to me quite often, but always when I was on the Vodafone roaming, and Vodafone roaming still doesnt work in some places I have used it.

I do not recall what network I was on when this happens but basically I do not care. I pay 3 for a phone service. It is their duty to get it sorted...
    3. Sending SMS outside Ireland, to networks which 3 have no agreements with is purely at your own risk, 3s mistake was not telling anyone this which IMO was a serious mistake on their part. If the other person does receive it it would be because the gateways on their (foreign) network is open for testing and possible future roaming agreements. This is how I can now text O2 UK customers.

It is not and should not be my problem. Why is it that 3 think that they can start offering a phone service when you can only use the services offered on a selected number of networks. It's not feckin' brian surgery; get your services soretd and then start selling them. Anything less is plain bad business. How about I only pay 3 for part of their service?
    4. Never affected me, but then, I dont use my phone a whole lot.

I use my phone a lot (for business), hence I pay for a business level subscription. The fact that 3 did not state this explicitly at the time I signed up puts their business ethic in a very bad light...
    5. Now, this I agree on, they need to kill this crappy walled garden, just let people access the open internet, any Nokia Symbian based phone will be able to access the real internet just fine, with Opera. The N73 runs a new browser based on Apple WebKit (JavaScriptCore and WebCore). Really, 3 should just let people browse at their own risk, block porn if they want to protect subscribers.

It is quite frankly the stupidest thing since hipster jeans...
    6. 3G access works just fine outside Ireland, I was in Hong Kong and I was able to browse Planet3 and I was able to download news and video clips just fine, and for free too.

Nope, it doesn't work in the UK and I was informed by a tech support person that is doesn't work outside Ireland.
This has been said before, but anyone who remembers when meteor just launched, how bad its coverage was and how crap its roaming was. Rome was not built in a day, new networks (3 is now 1Yr old) take time to work out the kinks.

That's a bull**** excuse. Why do people accept companies offering a third rate service on the premise that "it will get better". There should be legislation against this tye of business ethic. 3 charge me for a service they are un-able to provide, period..

Sounds like it anyway. Fortunatly it never happened me, yet :p If it did, I would be on the phone to them when it happened to get it sorted. I would ring them every time it happened too noting what network I was using at the time as well.

There is one exception, when at work, my manager was calling me, my phone never rang. I was able to reproduce the problem, I called my number from her vodafone mobile, my phone never rang, I called 3. They sorted it. That was the same month I joined.

I rang them about my own issues when on Voda roaming, they said they would get it sorted they did, but occasionally there are still glitchs which I think is down to the fact that the phone is trying to connect to 3, however poor the signal is.
3 are not responsible for Vodafones network and they only guarentee reliable service on their own.

3 just launched a year ago, Rome wasn't built in a day, you cant expect a new company to have roaming agreements with every major network in every single country that you want to send texts to within a year. Meteor didnt have that many when they launched, neither did Eircell and Digifone when they started. It all takes time. If I wanted good roaming agreements and intl texts I would have stayed with O2.

3 never marketed themselves as a business network. Both of them aim at the general consumer. Vodafone is the business network, they aim at businesses more then general consumers.

Can I ask, why did you go for 3 if you wanted your phone for business, especially since they are new?
    mayhem# wrote:

And it is the biggest downside to their network, I wanted 3G, and I dont want to pay the rip-off prices that are Voda and O2, so I went for 3. If they scrapped that crappy walled garden, I would be delighted. Internet on the Go :D

Yours must be a 1-1000000 case. Few people are still reporting these issues anymore, so it has to be a once off IMO. I never had issues roaming like I said. I have the bloody bills to prove it (98Eur for using my phone in HK:rolleyes: ).

It aint an excuse, its a fact, Meteor were rubbish when they started, they had poor coverage and they launched too soon. They had huge roaming probems and a number of other issues, but they were sorted. 3 are no different. When Voda UK went live (I think they were the first UK network), they had massive problems, the "first ever call" was faked because the network crashed at launch day or something.

My advice to you, go with Vodafone, you will be much happier I bet. And they do better deals for business customers anyway. I certainly am not going to recommend anyone to 3 unless they can do without intl texting and internet access, your basic phone-is-a-phone type because right now thats all 3 are good for, basic calls, video calls and "local" texts.

Has anyone got any contact details for "3" other than their generic phone & email?
I want to give them one last chance of sorting my problems out. Somehow I do not see a customer support flunky giving a **** so I would like to contact somebody a bit higher up in the foodchain...

    Obviously not:

    Oooh look!
They must been reading this thread:
    08/09/06 **UPDATE**
I've just received a call from a 3 customer service representative. Apparently it "had been brought to their attention that I was experiencing some problems with their service"....
I had to list all the problems I have had so far again. In response I got the usual pass-the-buck story. It was probably due to either my handset, the coverage or both. When I explained to them that this was not the case and that this had been discusses over an over again the customer service "body" couldn't come up with any other suggestions...
All she could do was to increase my credit limit (again). I was also told that the credit limit was in place to protect customers from themselves and that they would always operate a credit limit system no matter how long someone had been a customer. This contradicts what I have been told before.
I was also told that I SHOULD have been able to use the 3G network while abroad and that my problems connecting to it were probably due to a coverage issue. Yeah right...

When I suggested that, in order to get rid of the handset issue, they send me out a new handset I was told that they could not do this. I could only upgrade to a new handset if I extended my contract by 12 months and if this would not solve the problems I would have to pay a very large cancellation fine to terminate my contract!
    Unbelievable....

Instead they offered to send me a refurbished Nokia 6680 to replace my current one.... So if this doesn't solve the problem I will be stuck with a refurbished phone while I paid for a new one....

From three.ie's blurb for the K610i:

The Sony Ericsson K610i - an ideal way to get into the world of 3. With great classic looks, and powerful features like it’s 2 Megapixel camera, Stereo Audio bluetooth and Dedicated Music key for instant access to 3UK’s massive music library.

    :D

Nope, it doesn't work in the UK and I was informed by a tech support person that is doesn't work outside Ireland.

I've moved to London, and roam with my 3 IE N80 all the time (most of the time on 3 UK, sometimes T-Mobile). I can access all of the 3 Ireland services when I'm on a 3G connection. I've been here since March and never had any problems on that score

I know all about that repeating text issue though - very annoying! It hasn't happened in a good few months for me, so I thought it'd be resolved finally..

Does any1 know when and if the N73 is coming out on 3. It seems to be far superior with battery life compared to other 3g phones

e.g 1min of calls=2mins of calls when your in the UK

Unlike the rest, 3 dont sell SIM packs, AFAIK the only way you can get a SIM pack is with a new phone (or as a freebie when you upgrade).

I phoned today, the rep told me that the N73 is on their September upgrade list, and that they hope to have it in soon. He told me that as soon as phones are in stock, they update the website to include them, basically keep checking store.3ireland.ie, when the phone comes out, it will be listed their.
3 will call me when the phone is available (I am 2nd on the list for a callback apparently).

I also asked, again, about the unlocking, nothing new to report, they are still waiting on Nokia to ship them the correct software
Also the rep told me that only 35 people have called in requesting unlocking of their handsets.

The N73 should have a fairly good batterly live with a 1100mAH battery. It certainly has a decent screen, and a very decent camera, personally I cant wait to get it *starts maintaining a state of cat-like readyness :p *

just got this of the internet

    (BizWorld)

Mobile media network, 3 Ireland, has claimed that over 80pc of the population can now access its mobile media services, it said today.

Ireland's fourth mobile operator and 3G specialist said that over 3,200,000 consumers throughout the country have access to the 3G network.
David Hennessy, 3's Head of Network Rollout said, "Our strategy has always been to roll out the most advanced network in the country, creating a better quality service and offering more choice to consumers."

sadly im not one of that 80% but hopefully i will be soon

Try dialing 333. At the options press 2 (PAYG) and see if it gives an option to check your account balance.
