Oh dear, "superfast"? You do realise any decent website is running off gigabit connections right? And even smaller websites can easily upload at 200kb/s.

And even if they couldn't, 2mb would come in very handy if you were to download two files from different servers at say 100k/s each, no?

    Stop talking gash.

there is not much that you can download off websites other than linux distros that would benefit from 2mbit dl. websites won't load any faster than they already do with bb. what else is there to download excluding torrents that aren't small 10 mb files? it makes no diff where they dl in 1 min instead of 2.

Smart Telecom will be running fibre to the exchanges and providing ADSL2 to their customers. They are not putting ADSL2 lines to the exchanges. And as Garfield said and has been mentioned already ADSL2 does have a longer reach. I'm clutching at memories but I think I heard 6.something kilometres mentioned.

It's true that eircom have not been checking bandwidth usage...

I've been downloading ridiculous amounts, and not a single word has been said about it.

I hope, for my financial sake, that this new speed and upgrade will not bring with it hefty fines for us outlaw-cap-breakers...

Didn't you already post this, or something incredibly similiar?

There are many things that benefit from a faster pipe. Connection sharing is a huge one - 512 might be perfect for one, ok for two but depends on what people are doing. It also lets people continue their general internet usage as they're downloading large downloads at high speeds. People who use that russian music download site would be please (just clutching at examples). Or those who want to download the next Matrix Online Beta (1.89GB is a large download in fairness) and it's very, very slow on just a 512 connection at full speed and it definately makes the connection next to useless as it downloads - unless you've the patience to half the bandwidth etc. </rant, sorta>

Other people can provide better examples.

Patches, mods and demos for games can be huge, HL2 off steam, service packs for windows, whole albums of mp3's from itunes, all of mp3 etc. Theres LOTS out there that woul benefit from higher download speeds and is completely legal. And porn of course ;)

i've been looking for a decent network speed monitoring program for a while, do you reccomend Azureus? Or anything else?

Here's the wholesale prices which also gives the upload speeds. All resellers like IOL and UTV will be using these wholesale produces. These are just for the residential services.

    The old products.

    512/128 kb/s RA 24:1 EUR 27
    512/128 kb/s RA 48:1 EUR 20.10

    2048/128 kb/s RA 24:1 EUR 27
    1024/128 kb/s RA 48:1 EUR 20.10

Is there any reason why re-sellers cannot offer the higher speed (business 3mb/4mb) service to anyone that wants it at a more competitive price then Eircom ???

ah... Azureus is a Bittorrent client not a network monitor, you might want to look for Netmeter or DUMeter if you want a network/transfer monitor program

Sorry what I meant is do Eircom offer the 3mb/4mb as Wholesale products to other providers ?

if thats what you do then fair enough, but for me i very rarely dl mods or demos. patches are usually very small. only point ill make though is if you check netlimiter when every a patch comes out for hl2 on steam it only dls at about 35-40 k/s for me anyway. steam dosn't tell you that and they are valves servers that have massive bandwidth!
i take the point about connection sharing though. the other one about allofmp3 though, idont cos mp3 are so small anyway unless they are uncompressed but why would anybody other than an audiophille do that. matrix online?, who would want to play that?

Yes, all eircom.net ADSL and RADSL products are sold as bitstream wholesale products to other providers. There is little margin in the wholesale vs. retail price which is why the non-eircom providers only charge a small bit less than eircom, but can offer value add in caps and ancillary services.

long thread so havnt read it all so maybe this was said before

if everyone on the 512k home plues will be upgraded to 2mit it might explain alot of the failures since i assume eircom has been testing every line of being able to get adsl @ 2mbit from the start

It's good news but i'll still be switching to smart in July. I signed up as one of the first 100,000 for that great 35e price. I'm currently paying esat 47e p.m for their 512kb package with a 16gb cap. The line rental makes that over 70e pm. So basically i'm getting 4 time's the speed at half the price. Eircom is finally getting some solid competition and tbh I hope they lose a lot of customers. They have been ripping people off for far too long.

It will be nice to have the 2mb connection while I wait for smart. That's definitly something I wasn't expecting. :D 128 upload is a complete joke though. Upload speeds should be in the ratio of 4:1 with download speeds at least up to 2mb.

If Eircom decided that they wanted to charge you the €0.03 per a MByte that you would owe them then you would be stuck with a bill of around:

allocated: 112GB for the service so far
    Used: ~163GB

Size of possible Eircom bill: €1,650!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus mang - that's a lot of pr0n. Or is it the new Burberry catalog :D

Seriously though the UL speed needs to be increased. There are a multitude of valid reasons for it. Me playing UT2K4 and 'er indoors on SkyPe to her sister in England just ain't gonna happen on 128. I may want to host a game server - minimum of 258 for 8 players needed there.

Basically anyone with more than one pc in the house will find doubling the up speed would make a huge difference to performance - even with everyday ordinary usage. I'm not even talking about torrents here.

Comletely agree with you there Macros - 128 up is a serious problem in my eyes.
Sure, the 2meg down will really improve my "internet experience" ... but the poor up speed will continue cause me much heartache while playing UT2K4 and my sister on the other pc :(

    It's just not enough!

we'll be waiting a while for a Telecoms company to increase the upload speed as low uploads impair the performance of VoIP services which in the eyes of a company that makes revenue on POTS phone calls, is a good thing. Why would they remove a barrier to a technology that will lead to a loss of revenue? Remember, this is €ircon we are talking about!!!

I noticed the following on the eircom.ie news page:

Does anybody know if these exchanges will have the upgraded 1Mb/2Mb service from tomorrow then?

Or is it more likely that they will upgrade the equipment and switch on the service at a later date?

Well the 16th March @ 01:00 has passed and I don't think the speed has increased on the Blanchardstown exchange anyways. Guess the upgrade was for something else, or they are not activiating the faster 2Mb service yet.

They will probable activate them on the start of April.

I sink or swim operation I would say!!!

That's what ComReg is for. €ircon are insisting on calling the service broadband while the upload speed is crippled to such an extent that a 2 pc household can't use it fully (Smart is equally at fault here btw). Even if only the higher residential package was 256 up then that would make a difference. If they are refusing to do it then ComReg should step in and force the issue. ComReg are the one's causing the upgrade as it is - €ircon had a choice - up the service or reduce the prices. It was a no-brainer decision to up the speeds.

Jebus !!! Where do you people come up with this rubbish ???? I agree that the U/L speed needs to be increased, but saying they won't increase it because there is a conspiracy against giving people an option to POTS is just plain stupid. ISDN allows high quality speech communications on a 64Kb line WITHOUT compression ! 128Kb/S is seen as "CD Quality" rate for music reproduction.

If they wanted to restrict VoIP then why don't they cut you U/L to . . say . . 1Kb/s. Simple, thats not there intention in the first place !!
Telephone quality speech communications only requires about 36Kb/S . . less with compression. Quit with the urban legends please and try to realise that Eircom simply can't win no matter what they do with naysayers like you around.

Why is it fashionable to bash Eircom at every possible opportunity, I've seen threads where they have been blamed for the distance over which ADSL can be feasible, come on guys !!

Eircom have a very bad reputation when it comes to the consumer.
When Eircom start treating the consumer with the respect they deserve, they will receive our blessing.
For now, they will simply receive our bashing. We're quite sick and tired of being ripped off, and FINALLY, over the past year or so, some major speaking-up has been done.

And I've not only seen it with Eircom, I've witnessed complaints in person so plenty of retail shops in Dublin ... it may not sound like much, but the Irish attitude of "Ah sure it'll be all right, I'll just pay the money anyway" is changing rapidly. And about time too.

We're not quite as willing to lay down and take it in the ass anymore

I just noticed that the wholesale product isn't available until April 4th so I guess they can't offer it to Eircom customers before bitstream customers (esat, utv, etc). Eircom have stated that they will have customers upgraded by April 8th I think Eircom customers can expect the upgrade sometime between April 4th - 8th.
