    Irish guns 'fuel British crime'
Fear of gun crime is rising
Dissident Irish republican paramilitary groups have been supplying firearms to some of Britain's most violent gangs, fuelling the rise in gun crime, the BBC has learned.

There has been a trade in weapons originating from the Continuity IRA based around Limerick in the Irish Republic into cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, BBC Radio 4's File on 4 programme has found.

Sources within the National Criminal Intelligence Service have confirmed they are aware of incidents of paramilitary dissidents smuggling weapons into the UK.

    Irish justice minister Willie O'Dea,
who represents Limerick in the Irish parliament, told the programme he understands large family groups with connections in both cities have been acting as intermediaries for the trade in illegal weapons.

Either that story's seriously out of date, or both Frank Fahey and Michael McDowell won't be too impressed :D

Oh! Just blame the Paddies as per usual !! Talk about an old hat story, presented arse over tit! considerin they dont know who the justice minister is here, that the guns in Limerick came from "Gun"[Man]chester from two dodgey gunsmiths who converted decats to live fire.It is about as beliveable as the ecnomists report that Ireland is the best country to live in.
Wouldnt know wether to laugh or cry.

That story is dated Tuesday 14 October, 2003

Willie was a Minister of State in the Dept of Justice from 1992-94 - so I'd say that's where the confusion may have arisen.

From personal experience, people of Irish descent seemed disproportionately represented in the crime statistics for the part of the UK I used to live in. A lot of this was down to the location of a few very large halting sites in the area, which were linked to very high levels of burglary, theft of motor vehicles, public order offences etc etc. All of these rapscallions went about their criminal activities with very noticeable Irish accents, which did nothing for the perception of the Irish in the locality!
