Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry if this has been posted before. Say we buy a few computers from dell with WinXP pro each with its own activation key. The os is preinstalled. On 2 of the machines they have the same OEM number and different product ids(asset tag). I used magic jelly bean on both thes pcs to get the key that is installed. They are both coming up with the same product key neither of which is on the asset tag. I am confused  I have not reinstalled xp on either machine. Both are still oem. Thanks for your help.

Dell and OEMs in general use Volume Licenses. These don't require activation.

Its not an activation question. And if they are using volume licencing that wouldnt make a difference. I am not purchasing a volume licence, only a single yet the keys on both machines are the same with different actual product keys on the machines themselves.

Both machines were bought at least 4 to 5 monthas apart.

Im not sure you understand what he is trying to tell you.

Dell image 1000's of PC at one go, all with 1 Volume Licence, dells volume licence.

It wouldn't make sense to install each PC individually with its own CD key.

The CD key they gave you is YOUR licence key, the one installed on your machine is DELL's.

The 2 PC's could be 5 years apart and it would still show DELLs licence key

But because you paid for a licence they give you another one, the one on the side of your box, which is the one you own.

does this mean you could technically install Xp on another machine and use YOUR licence key from the side of the box to activate the second machines OS?

    No.
You need a license for each copy of windows.

And it's not YOUR license key - Microsoft still own it, but because you have paid them they allow you to use their software.

he also said "YOUR license" , :D

Even if it were legal to reuse an OEM license on hardware other than that which it was supplied with you could have problems reactivating later on.
Microsoft are clamping down on the use of the standard OEM keys " genuine advantage " etc. one effect of this is that people are phishing for keys http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=235847
