Where's the best place to get House plans?
Looking to build a house and want as many ideas as possible.
I've tried google but havent found much for Irish market, or that would be in accordance with Irish Building Regulations.
A few sites I found so far are -
    http://www.century.ie/cent/cip_plans2.asp
    http://www.irish-house-plans.com
Sites with pictures, Ground + First floor layouts would be handy.
Would Book shops have much to offer?
    cheers

I think there are about 3 or 4 different house plan books out there.
What you could also do as what I did and visit any new housing estates, see if u like the houses, if u do then get a copy of the plans off them, you can use some of the ideas and incorporate these designs.
You could also sit down and do a few sketches then use the plan books to see if there is anything similar to pick one of their houses.
Also I used a piece of software called House Plan, a bit americanised but it was grand as you could do walk throughs and that once u had you walls laid out

Be careful about using some one elses plans, or visiting a web site and copying their plans. Copyright , and data protection laws will be vigorously enforced by the plan designers. Remember large and small companies have invested money in developing particular house designs, so they will persue copyright theft .

Even if you get a draughtsman that works for a company, who designs your plans in his spare time for you. The company may still have the right to claim copyright on his work . I was recently asked to join a tf company, that had very restrictive clauses in the employment contract, that I was reluctant to sign, no signature, no job.

Just a word of warning :)

Some traditional type houses for the Irish market aswell as other types. I can recommend the Cork County Council Rural Design Guide if you're looking to build in the countryside, or just have a traditional Irish-type house.

I doubt you'll find any Irish Web Site as good as

    http://www.irish-house-plans.com

    Chat with an Engineer/Architect.

    I found these websites good:

    http://www.globalhomes.ie/housecatalogue.asp
    http://www.eplans.com/
    http://www.houseplanguys.com
    http://www.houseplansconnection.com
    http://www.allplans.com
    http://www.eplans.com

Also if you go to library thay normally have a good selection of house plan books. Easons have some as well. Best of luck

to me the obvious place to go is to look at real, every day houses. Two county councils that I know of now scan all documents for planning permission and make them available free of charge (including house plans):

    http://www.sdcc.ie (south dublin)
    http://www.dublincity.ie (dublin city council)

It is very dangerous, in my opinion, to choose a house plan from a book / internet. In the majority of cases it will not be suited to the site you have chosen, unless of course you intend putting the cart before the horse and choose a site to fit the house! The orientation of the house is very important and how it 'lies' with the surrounding landscape.
It is always better to get the advise of a professional. They will visit the site and agree with you a design that you will both be happy with. In the long run this will be money well spent. I have seen several built houses where the plans had been purchased from books that are at the best impractical and at worst an embarrasment to the owners. I was involved in one project where we had to re-position the sun room that had been built to the northeast elevation. The builder of course should never have overlooked that, but as he explain later, he was only working to the plans.

    Hi,

just in reply to the last thread. I know of a good company based in Letterkenny. Their website is www.plan-a-home.ie
They have a book and website, but their service is not all about just selling the plan to you. Yes you can buy standard plans at a lower cost than going through an architect, but if your site needs any additional work they can also help with that.
The site seems to be run by an architects themselves, and I'm pretty sure they have all the orientation checked out for you when you buy a plan. If you're still looking for plans, might be worth checking them out, i'm sure it's easy enough to find a plan and then give them a call to see what they say...
