JWT in a suit ! See the man behind the posts and the press releases !

Can someone record this show and upload a video of it so we can all see it. Screencaps of John's trendy shirt and tie too would be good.

Good grief, McRedmond must fall asleep with the sound of IOFFL ringing in his ears.

    Mike.

After having watched that, I don't know which is worse, ComReg or Eircom. Well actually, it's ComReg as they should be on our side.

So jwt is our poster boy then?

I thought the same. Great appearance by IrelandOffline, pity that insufferable moron McRedmond had to come on afterwards and spout complete and utter balls. I pity the average consumer who hasnt a clue. On the one hand they're getting some crowd they've probably never heard of telling them theyre paying too much for their broadband and on the other they're getting Eircom saying pretty much "everythings ok, youre getting great value for money. Dont mind those idiots"

    Makes the 'ol blood boil.

I was talking to a Colleague of mine the other day and we got on to the topic of €ircon and broadband. He told me he had signed up for €ircon Broadband to which I replied with the usual response to anyone who signs up for their service. Basically his reponse was that the only ads he ever sees is from €ircon, he only really knows about €ircon and at the end of the day, he'd rather trust the 'national' telecoms company rather than some unknown company like UTV. I explained that €ircon are not the 'national' telecoms company, as they are now a private company, sweating the assets and ripping us off and pointed him in the direction of IoffL. He then says to me, 'Ireland Off Line......isn't that the bunch of game playing nerds who want free broadband who are all over the radio these days? Why should I listen to them?' (I put him straight on the situation.....told him some of us watch porn too :D )

Maybe IoffL should get the services of a PR company if the funds could be rounded up somehow and try and put out a better image of the organisation?? If this chap thinks this about IoffL, then what hope have IoffL got?

I heard that Monica Leech is now available.

    In what capacity?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,290 ✭✭✭damien

If IrelandOffline had more than €4.50 to our name I think we would find far better uses for the money than hiring a PR company. Anyway, I don't give a flying fig if people think we're anoraks. Once the message gets out there about the REAL situation in Ireland I'll be happy. That's what is happening now in my opinion. We are being listened to by reporters. It's a slow progession but our impact is being noted.

eircom has the 5th biggest advertising spend in Ireland. That is a serious amount of cash. If you bombard the radio, tv and print media with ads then of course the average joe on the street is going to possibly listen and not know any better. One (cheap) way of combattng this is for every IrelandOffline member to print off some fact sheets and give them to about 20 people they know and educate each one about the *real* facts by talking to them and not just giving them the factsheet and walking away. Imagine the day you open the door to two well groomed lads with nametags and they ask to talk to you about net access.

Anyways, we are already in your mates head. He's heard of our name. I wonder would he have known us 12 months ago ? Our biggest barrier of getting him to know of us in any capacity has been broken, after that it's just more work polishing up his interpretations.

    EDIT:
Just to add that we do appreciate the input though. LFCFan, please do keep suggesting stuff to us. All your contributions to this forum are very welcome as are everyone elses. But a PR firm is a no no. PR lessons might be good though. Apparently Newstalk listeners think I need a sense of humour... :p

I incidently don't think people's perception of IOFFL is of a bunch of gamers. That's simply because IOFFL is presented as a consumer watchdog by the media. And IOFFL's people talk about broadband availability and pricing, not games.

Ok, I guess PR was the wrong thing to suggest. I agree. But wouldn't it be great to come up with something cheap and clever to get into the heads of even more people and try and counteract some of €ircon's brainwashing! I've lost count of the amount of people who I've spread the message to but most of them just nod their heads in agreement but continue to hand over their cash to €ircon. Pure lazyness on their part me thinks!

You need to convert people into fellow "converters".

What's your opinion on IrelandOffline creating fact sheets on how to save money or make the best choice when it comes to telecoms/net/broadband products ? A one page fact sheet and on the back perhaps a list of facts about the state of play in Ireland and a link to our website. Encourage people to photocopy them and pass them on to others ?

fact sheet is a good idea, IMO

That is indeed a good enough idea. I'd be willing to proffer a few factsheets around.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 3,816 Mod ✭✭✭✭LFCFan

how much does it cost to have a sheet/page/flyer etc inserted into a newspaper circulation? What about some of the free local newspapers?

I'd imagine it would be pretty expensive. Free papers wouldnt' be too free when it comes to advertising as that's where they get money from.

I think the basic idea of giving flyer to small group of people and expand from that. Chain-flyers as it were! :)

I can give you a bit of feedback from my wife, who is a reasonable example of somebody who uses broadband but is not that bothered about the technical details. Unprompted by me she mentioned this morning that she had heard an interview with IOFFL on some radio station, Q104 possibly, and she had no idea that Ireland was so far behind in speeds even after the upcoming upgrade and thought the whole thing is a disgrace.

I'd say the reason they do this is because IOFFL isn't an alternative, per sae. As most people only know about Eircom, and think that Eircom have their best intrests at heart, they'll stick with Eircom.

Seriously; some still use Windows 95. What type of broadband gaming geek would still use Windows 95? I'd say little to none. Same goes with Broadband. People are still signing up for Eircom dial-up packages, instead of going for BB (true; some can't get BB), but untill everyone, in their mass droves, can go get BB (all over the counrty), and actually use it for more than browsing the web (which Eircom's BB package is waaay faster then dial-up), the "people" will continue with what they have.

IMO, its not enough to say "you gotta slow speed", you gotta get them to relaise what they can do if they had faster net access. Movie's, etc. Untill then, they'll use it for web access only, which doesn't need a high speed.
