I haven't really enjoyed a good multiplayer RPG since secret of mana on the snes. And i'm not talking about MMORPGs or western bioware RPGs or anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions of some good recent japanese RPGs for PS2 or Gamecube that allow multiple players to play sort of co-op style?

well if you ignore the word good and add in the word expensive...you could try for crystal chronacles for the gamecube...

Except crystal chronicles isn't all that good. In FFXI the battle system can be played with 2 players. You could also try the excellent Tales of Symphonia which has a great beat'em up/RPG hybrid battle system that can be played by up to 4 players.

Failing that if you can play emulators you can get the not so good secret of evermore which is very like secret of mana or seiken denetsu (sp?) 3 which is secret of mana 3 and there is a translated rom of that game floating around the usual rom sites. Don't ask where to get it because it's against charter regulations but lets just say google is your friend.
