how can a commercial company own a .org website or is this just another scam that Americans are doing to us?

for example, im interested of setting up a personalised email for myself, so which better email then adnans@1980.org. yeah i know its cheesy but its the year i was born in, plus its easy to remember for everyone smile.gif

now, what happens when you type in www.1980.org? you get to a poxy search engine MegaGo which is utter and total shíte!! cyber squatting at its worst using a .org domain name. can anything be done?

Anyone can register a .com, .net or .org domain name, no matter what their status. When the gTLD's were set up originally, there were guidelines in place - .com for commercial entities, .net for networking organisations, .org for non-profit organisations - but they were only guidelines and there were no hard and fast rules. However this was before the Internet became so grossly commercialised, so people co-operated. Then it became commercialised, domain names became like real estate, and people started buying up "property". The pinnacle being the sale of business.com for nearly eight million dollars a couple years ago. Now the reality has hit, people are starting to let some of the stupider ones go, but there's still abuse out there.

    can anything be done?

Nope. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Think of another domain name.

Kinda sums up most .com businesses that I have seen. smile.gif The new .biz and .info domains are designed to cut down on that kind of goldrush but I doubt if they will protect anything other than Trademarks.

There was a class joke going around about that I remember, saying that Amazon weren't being allowed to renew their dotCOM, because they weren't in fact a profitable company. What makes it even funnier is that it was a couple years ago, and they still haven't got into the black. Not far off now though I guess...

So you got any biz and info registrations in John? I threw a few in here and there for show.biz - hell, you never know. I hope they get busted for the "illegal lottery" though. That'd be a howl.
