Snails or apples in the aquarium

A customer of mine asked this question, Could I add an apple snail to my aquarium? I have been told that they make the water rotten & the poloution would kill the fish. I did reply at the time with my knowledge and I will post my reply in a few weeks.Anyone got any comments or imformation on the apple snail
