I'm of the firm belief that everyone should have some Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in their Collection.

Its my belief they should have all Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and a heathy dose of The Birthday Party

my favourite Nick Cave records are
    1 The Boatman's Call
    2 Your Funeral, My Trial
    3 Henry's Dream
    4 Tender Prey
    5 The Good Son

I didn't get the most recent double album - presumably you recommend it?
    Great reviews

also is the triple CD of b sides worth a purchase?

Didn't get those myself either, so I'm afraid I'm of no help to you.

saw Bikini Kill play a great gig in Charlies with Bis and Team Dresch
it was around the time of Reject All American, 1996.
Their first mini album is cool too esp Carnival

Don't know about the b-sides but the newest stuff is very good. I've probably got all his stuff, except live stuff and compilations.

My favourites are From Her To Eternity, Murder Ballads, Tender Prey, Henry's Call, and The Boatman's Call. I'm sure that'll change but it'll do for now...

The Nick Cave b-sides is well worth it, lots of unreleased stuff on it. It's a far better overview of the Bad Seeds than that Best Of from a few years ago. All the Bad Seeds related bands are exceptional. So I second the sentiments that everyone should have healthy doses of Bad Seeds and Birthday Party and supplement with Barry Adamson, Neubauten, Dirty 3, Die Haut, Crime and the City Solution, These Immortal Souls, Anita Lane and whatever else I've neglected.

didnt read through this thread, so most of these were probably discussed already, but for what its worth here is some essential indie/alt (i'm going to be liberal with the meaning of these phrases!) listening....

    joy division
    velvet underground
    radiohead
    sigur ros
    explosions in the sky
    M83
    ted leo and the pharmacists
    pixies
    nick drake

and probably loads more, but these just sprung to mind right off the bat......
