Why is the .ie domain so much more expensive over every other name? (Ripoff Ireland perhaps?)

anyone know when the .eu is going to be enabled?

It's not the most expensive by a long stretch. Go off and have a look at pricing for a lot of other ccTLDs and then come back here :)
You'll find that most ccTLDs with the exception of one or two cost the same as IE domains.
It's also a managed registry, so registrations are not automated.
CNOIB is in many ways under priced and as a result of this is far too spam friendly.
It is TOO easy to register 1000s of CNOIB simply for the purpose of spamming and phishing.

    I wouldn't hold my breath.

We've been promised .eu by November, although its not clear whether or not that will actually be achieved. One major benefit of the way .ie is managed is that you are very likely to get the domain you want.

ok i did a little research, and point taken there are more expensive ccTLD's out there, however i wouldn't agree 100% Some are more expensive and others aren't.
For an individual to apply for a dot ie costs €119.79! this is pretty expensive, I understand that resellers etc. do give cheaper prices than this.
Still it's not very encouraging compared to other countries for instance :

    http://www.plugsocket.com/domain-names/
    and
    http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/name-it/country.jhtml

these were just two i surfed up, it's noted that there are some very expensive ones around like New Zealand, Austria, Japan etc. but compared to a lot of them, our country's rate is right up there with the high price ones.

I'm not the only one that might disagree either i came upon this while searching, some of it makes interesting reading!

in fairness the dot ie name is a benefit to an irish company/group/organisation.
Although after a brief search around theres a good few that don't subscribe to the spendy dor ie,
    makes you wonder tho!!

Would it be an advantage to have sub level domains like other countries? I presume if they were a bit cheaper lots of people would like to have them.

    regarding the dot eu domain
    im not holding my breath!!
as an alternative I came across this recently,

eu subdomains are fairly common, we have http://hosting365.eu.com/ for example, but the 'real' .eu domain should be out by the end of the year or early next year all going well. Will be interesting to see if it has any impact on the .ie space...

Only if you go direct to the IEDR, which you are encouraged NOT to do.
If you go direct to Nominet you would pay about £80 Stg for a co.uk.
