I say for the English there will be a themes question for comparitive, and if anyone is doing Hamlet deception is a great theme, loads to write about! It runs through all my texts too, Silas Marner and Strictly Ballroom...

What do you think of Strictly Ballroom?I find it hard to do in Comparitive section. Is deception another word for lying and corruption and general stabbing in the back??

Its crap. Hate it, but gotta do it! Deception is false appearances, you can work the corruption and back stabbing into it too.

Well everyone was convined Dickinson would come up last year, and she didn't so you'd be kinda screwed if she didn't come up again. Stupid teacher, how the f*ck would she/he know, I'd laugh if she didn't come up because then her/his students could lash out at him/her with good reason.

I wouldnt just count on that....Boland is also tipped for the female poet part. Anyway, ill do Dickinson, Boland and Wordsworth, and maybe Kavanagh.

(By the way, is it just me or is Gertrude not referred to by name in the whole play?)
    It's just you.

They may not do it very often, but one of the quotations I learned was:
    “O Gertrude, Gertrude!
When sorrows come, they come not single spies,
    But in battalions”
    (Act 4, Scene 5)

Oh, and a question about the Irish paper - I heard that Faoilean definitely won't come up because the poet, Michael Davitt, was caught using child pornography and there was a court case and stuff. Did anyone else hear about this? I hope it's not true because it's such an easy poem

Nope can't say I've heard anything about him defo not coming up. It seems a bit wierd though, because the child pornography thing is his own personal business and nothing to do with his poetry....I wouldn't omit it totally, and its not as if it's increidibly challenging or anything. (I doubt there will be a question on him in Stair though...!)

    :)

Where did you hear it from? I heard it from a girl in Newpark. I want to try figure out if it's true or if it was just a stupid rumour that started up

I can't remember but I've heard it more than once, btw it probably is just a stupid rumour but it kinda makes sense that it won't come up, I wouldn't think the people who set the exam would put a paedophile on the paper.

What I actually meant was is he a paedophile, or is it just some vicious rumour that was started up for some reason

No that is true, it was in The Irish Times I'd say over a year ago.

Well if it was in the paper over a year ago I'm sure they would have taken Faoileán off the course, rather than leaving it on the course but never using it.

Well it was at the end of 5th year so we'd already started the course, and I'm pretty sure the course has to be set 2 school years prior to the leaving.

That's a good point! :o I'm also surprised that a lot of our English teacher haven't heard about it. My teacher always brings in The Times on Monday and reads us out an article, so I'm surprised she hasn't heard anything about it.

Do Boland and Dickinson alone maybe but just Dickinson and your asking to get shot in the foot. Even studying only the two female poets is probably a mistake, the examiners know alot of people will only do that so the question could be a complete b!tch to do. I'm doing four just to be safe but putting most of the emphasis on Dickinson and Boland.

I know, isn't he? I don't know why so many people seem to hate his poetry, I really like it

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭*Angel*

So have you guys got any help for Longley? I think that he is gonna have to be my 5th poet, I can't afford for one not to come up. Problem is I haven't bothered studying him...

anybody got any ideas for the aiste in higher irish?
We have covered almost all the possible topics.. i think.... so i'm just wondering has anybody got any predictions on it?

Nobody seems to have any real business tips either!!! They would be really helpful. Personally i'm leaving out units 5 and 6 and studying the rest in detail. Of course i will fly over them 2units just for the short q's but apart from that i'm depending on the other units.

Ok I don't have any business tips but so far in Irish our teacher reckons: Faoilean, Mac eile ag Imeacht and Fiosracht Mna. In English our teacher practically writes the paper! If your doing Silas Marner there might be a q on Godfrey Cass. General Vision and Viewpoint prob comin up and he said that there has to be a female poet because of sexism... but I reckon Dickinson + Boland and do Wordsworth in case. in history I heard French Republic or Stalin comin up too.

Well it looks like I'm doing Dickinson, Yeats, Kavanagh, Heaney and Longley. So far I've only studied Kavanagh and Dickinson a bit.

I definitely wouldn't recommend just doing 2, I went into my mocks just knowing a bit about Kavanagh and Yeats and neither came up, so watch out...

ps. don't tell me to relax
